Default Front fairing options

Hello all,

I am new to the forums and had a few questions that seemed appropriate for this venue. I just recently got my first bike, a '93 CBR600, that had been siting idle in a garage for a good number of years.

The fairings are very rough (held together mostly with stickers and duct tape), That seemed to bother me less and less as i began to remove them to do maintenance on the bike though as they really look good without them. The problem is the front 3 pieces that hold the headlight and turn signals, they need to be replaced badly but I have yet to find a reasonable priced set without buying an entire fairing set for the bike.

Are there places to get just the nose pieces, or perhaps an all in one piece for the front that won't run me more than I paid for the bike? I am debating trying to sand and patch the existing fairings with some fiberglass bodymesh as well, has anyone had much luck repairing badly damaged fairings?

Thanks in advance!

No, there is no super cheap source for those pieces... they are the most commonly broken. Watch ebay and be QUICK about it if you do see them (the upper left piece especially).

I have had decent success repairing them (not perfect). There are a bunch of threads about painting fairings (do a search) and fixing them. Painting these plastics is different then most auto-painting.

I prefer the 'plastic weld' method of fairing repair (doesn't work if any material is missing).
For cracked body-work simply remove the piece,
tape the crack on the good (painted) side to hold the crack flush with itself (use tape that comes off easily and doesn't wreck the paint,
on the back side of the fairing use heat (I use a old butter knife heated with a flame until HOT) and then melt the plastic back together... BE VERY CAREFUL not to push your hot-knife all the way through the plastic (obviously). Just knit/stitch the plastic.

I would then recommend some duct tape or 2 part epoxy or something on the back side to add a bit of strength to the plastic-welded crack. I have ridden the bike with plastic welded fairings for over 10,000kms and no problems.

After the above is complete you can leave it and live with a very slight line where the crack was or sand/fill/paint.

Nice bike by the way.... same colors as my first F2.

Post some more pics if you can... lets see the damage close up. And if you do decide to fix the plastics, post the progress with pics.

Well upon further inspection (And a good amount of cleaning), the majority of the fairings look fairly good. The throttle side upper fairing looks to have taken the brunt of the damage but just needs some minor patching and a ton of your 'Plastic welding'. The clutch side upper isn't nearly as bad as i thought and just needs a bit of the welding.

The unfortunate part is that I don't particularly like the color scheme, I will probably go flat white for visibility over the whole bike. I would hate to sand the nice pieces down so if anyone has need for them and has some flat colored or sanded ones in similar condition I'd be happy to trade straight across.

I'll post updates on the repairing work of the uppers as I go.

Rears look pretty clean.

Glad it came up ok!
The last piece with the heavy damage I personally wouldn't bother trying to fix, it's too badly damaged and is going to be very easy to break again, if you're going to be painting anyway the investment in a new one would far out weigh the time & effort to fix that. I'd be surprised if you couldn't pick up a second hand one off the net with a lot less damage that only needs a sand down to repair.

That's just my opinion anyway. Good luck, there's loads of help of some of the experts on this forum if you ask.

I've started the refurbish on the front fairings to see how good I can get them looking. After removing the tape and decals, sanding them down and gluing what pieces I have of them together, my hopes are lifted. There are a few places I will need to patch, but i think once i start in with the fiberglass and epoxy they will be fairly nice.

Few smaller cracks to still glue but it is definitely holding together much nicer than i thought it would.

I have the same problem and could never find a glue that would bond. this plastic can't be chemically welded, unless you've found something...What are you using?

if you do the heat weld I'd love to see a photo of the backside

Thx, that's some hefty work

After sanding the joints i used ordinary superglue to reassemble the fairings. Once that set I used fiberglass/epoxy on the backside to reinforce and epoxy on the front to smooth out some of the damage on the outside. Decided against trying to heat-weld it as i didn't want to do something i could not reverse. Fiberglass/Epoxy kit = $20, worth it to try anyways.

One thing is for sure, if these fairings break, it wont be where I've repaired them.

First coat of outside epoxy after super-gluing and sanding.

Current state, still very rough but the holes are filled and the pieces are back together. considering what it started out looking like when i got it (in 3 pieces), i am pleased with how it is going.
