Well, I know this much...if you clean your chain every 200 miles, you will NEVER have to scrub it...lol! I prolly clean mine every 600-800...and I clean mine far more often than most of the guys I ride with. Not sure what the owners manual says...but my opinion is every 1000 miles is minimum...400-800 is taking good care...and every 200 is neurotic. As long as you are doing it right and not harming the rings more is better.

If your a total slacker like me, I have 28,000 kms on my Gixxer chain, and I have never ever scrubbed it. I keep it lubed and adjusted to the right tension. I don't typically beat the hell out of my ride, b/c I am usually riding with my wife and I don't want her to push to hard. If you want it lookin' like new scrub it, otherwise just ride and enjoy it.

i was told that if you dont clean your chain every 1000 to 1500 miles or so, the dirt and grime will eat away at your sprocket

well, it's certain that sand/dust particles in your chain lube will basically start sanding the chan/sprocket...eventually. For me, the grater concern is the sand working through the rings and ruining the integrity of the chain. I do not have a chain guard, so it takes ma only about 10 minutes to clean the chain and re-lube.

Well, nothing can get slung if there isn't anything. When I lube the chain I remove all excess lubricant with a cloth. Excess grease and thick gunky grease just collects more dirt anyway.

Any motorcycle specific chain lube will do the trick if you lube it regularly. I try to do it about every 700 miles or so. You can also get chain wax and it isn't supposed to fling as much. Itried it but my chain never looked any different after I sprayed it on, so I went back to regular chain lube (they were right though, it didn't fling as much).
