The age old oil debate has reared its head and i can not resist it!
I have put 25 k miles on my bike since last year (total now 40K) using the cheapest main brand 10/40 semi synthetic car oil I can find usually morrisons supplied texaco havoline who were selling it recently for 9 quid for 5 litres or castrol gtx from tesco's for about the same price it just depends who is cheapest at the time.I agree with the poster who uses rotella, that is the best but it is hard to find here in the uk in small quantity's as it is sold primarily for truck and ships engines here.
I change my oil about every 4000 miles and have checked the ends of the cam lobes on my bike several times and can see no obvious signs of wear, this is where it will normaly show first on most bikes.I have been putting car oil in high performance bikes for 30 years now and have never had a single problem related to this however I realise it is very controversial and do not use the modern energy saving oils.
Ironically the only oil/premature wear related problem I have had was with a Honda vf 750 i bought new in the early 80's using honda oil and special additives packs however the bike had design flaws and that has a lot to do with my cynical attitude towards bike specific/high priced items to this day!
If you want to use bike specific oil why not use halfords own brand that is quite a bit cheaper than the major well know brands and everyone I know who uses it has never had a problem either.they often have 2 for 1 promotions on it making it very cheapif you can catch one.
Hope that helps but I have a feeling it will fuel a huge debate!

thanks Sulai19 for your very interesting input there.
Personally I would never put halfords oil in anything or cheapy own brand crap as it is current understanded to be, but this could change my opinion completely.
I dont think i will put it in my car or cars to come but maybe it will suffice in my 20year old cbr. I mean after all it is a Honda.
I think the likelihood though is i will by a cheaper branded product rather than the best oil out there as by the sounds of it it probably isnt worth it in my bike. I dont even plan on having it by next summer would like a new cbr600rr by then.

halfords sell there own brand motorcycle semi synthetic in 5 litre containers in the stores and it should be cheaper than castrol. etc
it is jaso certified for high performance bikes,i would imagine it is one of the major brands (probably castrol as that is the major branded bike oil they stock) of oil re packaged for halfords as i cant imagine them knocking it up themselves.
Why not go down saturday morning and have a look for yourself assumining you can get past all the chaved up novas in the carpark of course.
then pop over to a morrisons petrol station and buy 5 litres of texaco havoline for less than a tenner.
complete oil change saturday afternoon, takes about 20 mins then ride to lidls and buy some cheap booze with all the money you saved.
btw a good friend of mine puts vauxhall car oil in his gsxr 1000!
and you thought i was bad
