This is something weird to me. all my wires are plugged in good and tight, no loose/shorted/dirty connections that I've seen, sensors are good, clean and seem to be working, but my temp needle bounces around sometimes, or goes down to a position indicating completely cold. didnt do this until AFTER I adjusted the valves, which confuses me, far as I know I didnt loosen/damge any wire connections, and I replaced the coolant with fresh.


any insight?

I also notice at 55mph or so in 6th gear, I can hear a rattling from the motor, I dont know the RPM since my tach doesnt work, but it sounds somewhat like something loose in there, although it only happens within what I"m guessing to be a 500rpm range. I'm not really sure what would make this rattling sound.
Near as I can tell, it seems to be coming from somewhere directly under the gas tank, I know it ISNT the cam chain tensioner, since I checked that already, I'm thinking either a piece of plastic of some variety, since it only happens at a certain rpm, which I'd imagine creates a certain vibration capable of making the sound.

 

Erratic temp gauge:

You say all wires are correct/connected but if you haven't already done so, you need to check using a multimeter, and test the gauge the way the manual says.

Only other cause for erratic behaviour I can think of is poor instrument cluster grounding, or not enough coolant in the rad. Anyone else go any ideas?

Engine noise:
1. Have you RTFM troubleshooting sections.
2. Original cam chain tensioners are not 100% reliable even if checked. If you have a manual one, and its correctly adjusted, you can probably rule CC noise out.
3. Check everything for tightness and that the correct isolators are in place (eg rubber blocks that stop the tank banging on the frame).

 

I already said the cct ISNT the source of it, just changed coolant last night, inspected a bunch of things. the noise seemed to be coming from the top area of the bike, although I havent isolated precisely where yet, as it ONLY does it at 55mph, and determining the source of a noise at that speed is extremely risky.

 

Could it be that one of the rubber dampers that go under the gas tank fell off? Mine do every time I take off the tank. You know, the rubber piece between the tank and the frame.
Have you burped the radiator? Perhaps an air bubble in the coolant system?

 

I was recently idling it cold, and I think I understand what it is now. in some weird way, I think I need to replace my exhaust and the gaskets in there to fix it. when I heard it I felt the top of the valve cover, wehre it "seemed" to be coming from, and felt no vibrations or negative things, so I suspect that its very likely due to this crappy exhaust I've got. I've got another exhaust purchased (thanks Tripicana) and will see what that does for me, along with generally improve the bike a little by quieting it down.

 

If you are running stock gearing, 55mph is about 5000rpm. Down one tooth on the countershaft sprocket and you are at 5500rpm. That happens to be the buzziest rpm range on a hurricane so if something is gonna rattle it will.

 

oddly enough, my sprockets are stock sizes, but my pipe DOES suck, so I wouldnt be surprised. its also totally possible knowing my bike that I've got some little piece of plastic under the tank thats loose ish and making that racket. on my ride, I'll believe almost anything honestly.
