Red face Someone Help In Richmond Area

Hey guys, My name is John everyone calls me franky cause I got no neck like frankenstien ... But anyway I have been a member now for a while and am trying to get my 89 600f running. I was running initially but is not anymore, I know my bike needs work but any help to get it running would help. I am not very familiar with bikes. I was wondering if anyone was in the Richmond Virginia area that would not mind helping out. As I have tried to fix it myself before. Summer is coming and as we all know we all want to ride. I am a quick learner so if anyone does try to help I would not be asking for the same help again. I would love to take it to a bike shop but my money tree died last week and barack obama forgot my stimulus check LOL. Thanks alot any help if appreciated and so is any comment.

Check all your fuses to start. Is the engine kill on. Is your battery fully charged? My bike will turn over on a battery that is not fully charged but won't start. I would check battery voltage first, then the fuses and go from there. Like Tripicana says, if you're going to do this yourself, then you will need basic tools and a multimeter.

i even use a multimeter to check fuses that appear to be good.
x2 a weak battery can cause no spark.
pull a plug wire, stick in a plug, ground it to the engine, crank and see if it sparks.

Got to get a multi meter. My fuses looked good. My battery may need to be charged but I think my carbs may need to be cleaned. I am afraid to do it myself or take it to a shop because the bike looks like a piece of **** to be honest but I love riding so to me it does'nt matter. I would like to start it before I try to fix it up.

you definatly want to get your battery charged first. if you use a car charger, put it on the 2 amp setting, anything higher will fry the battery. the ignition system on most bikes needs atleast 12 volts to get spark. it might have enough to crank the starter, but you need to check if you're getting spark. multimeters are cheap for basic troubleshooting. you can find cheap ones at harbor freight, sears, and most autoparts stores. you're not building intricate circuits so you dont need to spend $100 and have it calibrated. harbor frieght sells them for $5 and you can order them online.
depending how long its been sitting, the fuel can gum up the carbs. you might be able to just pull off the float bowls and spray out the passeges with carb cleaner. if the gas is over a year old, i would atleast drain the tank and float bowls.
if you dont feel comfortable doing repairs yourself, and dont want to pay dealer prices, maybe put up an add on craigslist in the motorcycle section asking if anyone local can help you out. someone might already have a post offering motorcycle services.
my bike has mismatched fairings, gas tank, missing mirrors, but i love riding my old cane.

I love riding too. I will definitely try to charge the battery my friend has a charger I will definitely try to change the tank as it had not gas cap lid and I did my best to cover it but I am sure the carbs are gummed up. I am just afraid to mess stuff up worst. I appreciate it ... I will try that multi meter.

you can use a car battery to jump start your bike. if you leave the battery in the car, just make sure the car engine IS NOT running.

i use a car battery anytime i'm gonna be cranking the engine over alot for testing.
