Exclamation Is it normal for idle to 'flutter'?

I've gotten alot of the kinks worked out on the bike so far, but cannot seem to get around this one. when I set my idle to 1200 rpm it will flutter from 1000 to 1500 or so. I'm sure a good carb sync would do wonders, but I was just wondering if this is normal with an older bike.

Next projects include: checking the cct (I'm hearing the ticking that is talked about in the forum), and checking my thermosensor. Hopefully I'm not in too deep on these ones - I am certainly no mechanic - but I really enjoy doing my own work on the bike.

The "flutter" is usually the result of needing a carb sync or valve adjustment. I would say it is kind of normal because most could use a carb sync or valve adjustment. THis applies to most multi-carbed bikes.

My engine started ticking, and the idle fluctuating, after I improperly installed a header and the exhaust started leaking at the manifold.

I'm sure new gaskets will fix it, but that won't happen until spring. Tomorrow the old girl will be retired early for the season and prepared for a complete teardown and rebirth as a badass streetfighter over the winter.

Make sure to post pics! I'm going to do a teardown as well and not too sure of the mods I'm going to do. My plastics are in really rough condition so I might do one or more of the following;

600RR tail section swap
digital guages
Plastic weld lowers and mid panels
Repaint (Not sure of scheme yet) - but probably to match my icon eternal saint helmet.

My plans so far:

- new tire front and rear (ordered)
- remove what's left of the stock plastics (and ebay those suckers lol)
- '03-'04 600RR tail swap (got the seat and little side panels ordered already)
- this belly pan (ordered)

- this headlight/fairing:

Size: 23.4 KB

- paint exhaust with Techline Black Satin 2000 degree header paint
- repaint engine black
- remove stock gauges from fairing mounted panel and make new fork mounted panel for them, perhaps do some funky new turn signal indicators
- paint or powdercoat wheels and frame black
- paint tank and plastics some wild candy, pearl, or chameleon colour
- chop the passenger pegs and mounts (using the solo rear seat cowl), hack off the unnecessary parts of the subframe and fab new mounts for the tail and exhaust
- new chain and sprockets

And since I'll have the engine out to do the paint, I'll clean the carbs and install a new CCT, and do whatever else needs done. That should keep me busy until spring I'll be starting a project log over on customfighters.com when I get going.

I like the Rogue fairing. I think you will have to get different gauges ( http://trailtech.net/vapor.html ) as the stock ones are a single assembly not individual gauges.

Post pics along the way.

New gauges are always an option . . . but if I can't get the stock ones out of that plastic pod and make a new panel and bezels, I'll turn in my Dremel
