Default New and need help

okay so i just bought a 1990 cbr600 f1 and it ran good when i first got it. i drove it for 3 days and one day it died on me. before it died, i was at a stop sign and it had no power taking off and felt like it was gonna die, i pulled over and it shut off. then i kept trying to start it back up and it finally did and i started to drive back home and it drove really bad, no power. then less than a minute later it died again. clicking the starter it would turn over and every thing sounds completely normal. i think the fuel pump went. i unplugged the tube going from the pump to the carbs and nothing comes out when i try to start it and it makes no noise, so does that mean its my pump? also after trying to start it for a while my battery died, so i hooked it up to my car once i got home and i kept the car OFF , but after trying to start it a few times while jumped to my car, my electronics dont come on anymore. when i turn the key to on nothing turns on.

Have you tried to check your wiring harness by chance for any issues??

Welcome to the CBR Forum,

Remove the battery and put it on a charger - see if it will charge up and hold that charge. If it is a lead/acid battery a cell may have collapsed which could give the symptoms you describe.

If that's ok, check the fuses and loom as said above.

Cheers, SB

Start with the basics.

Inspect the entire harness.

Before you do, get a spray can of contact-cleaner and
di-electric grease from the local auto store.

Checkout each connection. Disconnect each one and look it over
(for corrosion and/or heat damage).
Spray each connection with contact cleaner, pack the female with the di-electric
and then re-connect, move on...

Don't get lazy, go through the entire harness. Even if you don't find a problem here,
you want to assure that the 'bones' of the electrical system are solid.
Especially on a 20+ year old, recently acquired bike.

I'd also replace all of the fuses, with new ones.
They're cheap insurance, over risking one is marginal/flaky.

Be sure and give the r/r (regulator/rectifier) a once-over.
If it doesn't have a finned heat-sink, it should probably be replaced.

Don't neglect the bar switches, either. Carefully open them, hose 'em
and pack with di-electric (just like a connector).

After that's all been addressed, then start checking individual components.
Why replace the fuel-pump?...if it's a corroded/shorted wire,
that's causing the problem.

Everything I've listed is inexpensive to start with.
If the components can't communicate over the 'network',
it's hard for them to do their job.
Besides which...it's just good maintenance.

Try my advice, see where that gets you.
Then if you're still having problems, check back in.

Hope this helps, Ern

hey guys sorry i havent replied lately i ended up getting a new bike, i got a 2008 ninja zx6r.. but now that my cbr has been sitting around i really want it running again, so i got my electrical figured out, my battery was just dead... now everything turns on and works normal, i can try to start it but it obviously doesnt start because of the other problem. my bike turns over completely fine and sounds normal just wont start. do you guys think its my fuel pump??? if i unplug the hose that goes from pump to carbs... should gas be pushing out when i try to start the bike???? and can i bypass the pump on this year cbr? can i just gravity feed the fuel??

I dont have my manual in front of me but I'm pretty sure it describes how to test the fuel pump by powering it off the battery and measuring how much fuel it pumps in like 1 or 2 seconds or something. I dont know if the download in the sticky still works but if it does download it it has very valuable info in it
