My 1987 Hurricane Project Bike
 

I posted a picture in another thread but thought I should have a thread to show my project and progress.

Here is the bike. Its a bit rough:

I bought it for $300 US. It didn't run, but I got it running after cleaning and setting the carbs, and it actually runs good. Very strong, quiet and no smoke. The engine seems very sound. It's in decent shape and very clean, even though the picture doesn't show that very well. Sort of looks like it was put together out of a bunch of parts but the core bike is there.

I originally bought it for the engine for another project, but looking at it, it seemed sad to tear it down since most of it is there.

I plan on converting to 2003 RR plastics. I don't want to make it into a street fighter, even though that would be simpler. I think it will have a better new life as a reincarnated sport bike.

Sounds like an interesting project Dennis. Looks like a solid project. Glad that you got the engine running...that can be half the battle. Keep us posted on your progress & thanks for sharing. :-)

Thanks, I'm having fun with it. Got a new MIG welder for Christmas so I can make up the brackets for the RR plastics :-)

I have a lot of experience with the Keihin carbs, and even tho the guy I bought it from said he cleaned the carbs, I tore them down right away and found the pilots plugged. Tough to get them started with the pilot circuit plugged. It started right up after I cleaned them and set them. Had to set the sync too. The motor looks like it may have been rebuilt recently. All the gaskets look new and it is very clean. It changed hands a couple of times over the recent past, so who knows.

I will try and do updates as I go.

I got all the 2003 CBR600RR fairings for my Hurricane. Cost me $200 US, which is a pretty good deal. The upper fairing was cracked but I fixed it using the plastic welding method. I also bought the upper fairing stay and will mount it this weekend. Will post some pictures once I start mounting the fairings. I plan on painting the bike black. I'm going for a look like this:

It's really not that hard to do this and since I had no original plastics it seems like a good way to go.

Would you consider doing a writeup for this? I'm very interested in doing the same to my cane

Good stuff there, I looked into doing that to mine a while back but ended up going to all stock restore. annnnd I didnt even get to finish that because my motor just popped from previous abuse. Good luck with your project!

Where do you hail from? I'm really interested in seeing some one else do this as a non street fighter.

I'm in Wisconsin. I bought this thing to use the engine and talked myself into putting it back on the road instead. I looked all over for original fairings and they were just too expensive. Then I found a couple of guys who did this conversion on line and decided to tackle it. It's a little more complicated because there really are no good "how to" guides on the front fairings so I had to figure that out myself. I'm trying to carry as much of the RR look into the Hurricane. I like the way it's turning out. Once it all is painted should look pretty good.

It's really more a labor of love, because so far I have more money than I wanted to put into it. All the little pieces are killing me more than the big stuff. But I want to do it right.
