Montana man got it in one ! Clean the filter and put it back.
I'd say your idle jets are clogged too
but did not jet carbs
Bike will run fine with standard jets if all you have is a K&N - If it has non-standard pipes you may have to mess with it a bit. Send a PM to Sprock - he knows all about that

K&N in my '91 with standard jets and runs so very smooth right through the range.
Just clean the filter thoroughly and re-oil lightly Do not over oil the filter

A number of years ago I put a heat shield under my tank. I was lucky to have access to the material fire fighters wear but any reflective heat proof material will work. I put a layer from the front of the tank right through to the rear of the battery box. Also I ran a small piece down the fairing to stop the heat blowing onto your legs. Made the bike run cooler too. Several others who did the same thing had similar results.
