Default irratic starting problem

this has happened to me about 3 times now. every once and a while i will go to start up the bike it will turn over one quarter revolution and then just start clicking. usually i can just jump the terms and it will start right up. today i went to start up the bike and same thing. mind you i was at work rode 30 miles to work started up great this morning and hasnt happened for about a week. went to go bump start it started clicking no turn over what so ever. we ended up push starting the bike. got it started and i rode home no problems what so ever. i let it sit for about 3 hrs and went to go start it and started up great. idk whats goin on only thing i can think of is the battery is loosing a charge to the point where it just wont want to start anymore. and as you ride it it will charge it maintain it but the bat just looses charge.

any ideas?

if its clicking, is it clicking on the right side of the bike just below the seat? thats the solenoid, magnetic switches that commonly stick. you can replace it for about $50 or i think they can be rebuilt. check your local junk yard, they should have a compatible one for cheaper.

"usually i can just jump the terms and it will start right up." What terms? The ones on the starter relay? That would mean that something is wrong with the coil inside like rrasco stated above.
If your battery voltage is too low then that clicking noise ( starter relay ) will occur. Check your battery voltage first thing before you start it up. If it's low then battery or R/R issue. If voltage is good then starter relay or starter circuit issue. See my response in "electrical blues" post, the one above your own.

^ keep in mind, if its a r/r issue then the voltage on the battery may be good at times. also, it could be a surface charge on the battery.

is it a slow or fast clicking? slow would probably lean more towards battery or r/r, faster means the solenoid is bunked.
