There is a way to test the R/R to see if it's bad or not, but at the moment I can't remember how. They are known to go bad and if you do get a new one get one that has the cooling fins.
How long can our bike sit with the key to the on position before it kills the battery anyway? (small thread jacking)

I don't know how long it takes to die, but die it will.
I would replace the R/R anyway as it will probably fail as they typically do. Did you check all of the connectors to the R/R? They get loose /corroded over time and will cause the same symptoms as a bad R/R.

hello i have checked all conections and they are good . i put a volt meeter on it and i was getting 12.2volts at tick over and 13.4volts at 3-5000rpm . i also had my bat on charge all night so i will check that out later ..
are the volts to low and is this the start of the reg/rec being on it way out .
thank you again

I'm going through the same thing with my R/R right now on my 87 CBR600. I get the loss of power on the highway and then it won't start. Here are two good links to help you identify the problem:

All you need is a multimeter and a little time and you'll know whether its your stator, battery, or R/R.
I just ordered an R/R from bikebandit.com, but not the OEM one. I made the mistake of ordering a used OEM R/R from ebay last year and now I'm doing it again one year later. Now I am buying a new and improved one. The after market R/Rs claim to be better and last longer then OEM. I will give it a try.
