Default Help! New rider, engine overheating?

Hey guys! I just bought my first bike today. It is an 1989 CBR 600. Only paid 900 bucks for it and I am super proud of it! Got it running today, needed a battery and some new fuel. Also ran some Seafoam through it.

I know it needs a tune-up. Carbs are out of sync and also probably pretty dirty.

BUT I noticed that after it was idling for about 10-15 minutes the temp gauge was well about half.. maybe even slightly over the 3/4 mark. It doesn't show an actual temp on there, so Im confused where this is normal or overheating?

And I've tried to research this but can't find any info on where that gauge should be. Please help! Want to address this problem asap.

Thanks!

your issue sounds like ordinary temp range. I removed the thermostat from my last cbr to help cooling. didnt help that bikes case that it had jellified RTV floating in the coolant plugging passages until I flushed it good.

to remedy cooling issues, drain the coolant and flush it out, verify the waterpump works, and then, and this is important ensure your thermostat opens. stuck thermostats are SUCKY.

Thanks for the reply. I think your right, it seems normal now. Im just use to my car only running at the half mark.

Turns out there was no coolant in it.. So i topped that up, which helped. Also took it for my first ride and the temp gauge stayed around the half mark.

Just worried me because I bought the bike used, and you never know what to expect with these used private sales. Bike works great though! Good deal for $900. First ride felt great

Thanks again!

lesson I've learned. ALWAYS check fluids. I keep forgetting on new purchases.
