Working on '87 600 today... If anyone is around and wants to give me a hand, I'll buy ya a case of beer.
Background is that I bought bike with the seller telling me that it needs the carbs cleaned. (I believe that. Seller was straightforward.) It did start right up. We took it apart, cleaned the carbs, changed all fluids, new battery, and changed the spark plugs. Bike won't start.
I've gotten some great help in the other thread I've posted, but we still can't figure it out.
A Harley friend said the third carb is off. He put gas directly in each carb and got it to start. It ran for a few seconds and then died. I have a CarbTune but need it to run to adjust.
Anyway, I'm working on it today, so if anyone is local and can give me a hand, let me know!

Clean, clean and clean again. Carbs are notoriously fickle beasts. Even a tiny bit of crud stick in the pilot circuit will ruin your day.
Also, make sure you have a proper vacuum around the carb boots. Even a tiny crack will cause that cylinder to lean out.
Lastly, make sure the air filter is installed and sealed. If not, you will lean out.

As Corrupt said carbs are finiky. Pilot jets should be taken out to get them clean. I probe with a wire to make sure they are open.
Some simple things to look at. Make sure you are pumping fuel. If it starts with priming or starter fluid make sure you are getting fuel from the hose to the carbs.
One thing to note is when you clean the carbs it can take a while for the pump to fill the carbs. Make sure your choke is working also. Sometimes I stick my hand over the throat of the carbs while cranking to get them going after a clean and rebuild.
