Default Fuel Tank/Cap Question

Ok, so awhile back I purchased a used fuel tank in good shape off ebay for like $30. The tank had some rust in it so I had it acid dipped and epoxy coated to prevent future rust. So I am getting ready to get that tank painted so I can put it on the bike, but I noticed a problem. I am not sure of the year of the tank, but I think it may be from an 89-90, and I have an 87. One would think it would work, but I need you guys to check something for me. On my current tank, I stick the key in the gas cap sideways, and turn it to a 12 o'clock position to unlock the cap. When you remove the gas cap, there is a notch in the 12 o'clock spot where the cap locks to the tank. Well, on my new tank, this notch is in the 6 o'clock position, and the gas cap doesnt fit on backwards. I need someone with an 89-90 model to check the position of this notch, I may have to be get a gas cap from an 89-90. Either way, Im not painting this tank until I know I have a gas cap for it.

TIA.

I have an 89 and mine is like your current cap. The key goes in sideways and you turn to 12 o'clock. I am not by my bike now, but I do not recall where the notch is. I will check it later and let you know.

My cap fits crooked on my tank. Not sure why, but it does. Has a matching key to the ignition, so it must have always been that way. I noticed it a couple days ago. Weird

See, my ignition key is thinner than my fuel cap key.....I didnt even think about his being an issue, guess I should of tried the fuel cap when I got it. Let me know kinkead where your notch is, Im thinking the key orientation would stay the same, but they changed the notch....not sure why, but that would be my assumption. Either way this sucks, I could probably get another tank for the same price as a gas cap.

You have an 89?

I was assuming 87-88 were at 12, and 89-90 were at 6. Kink, if your bike is an 89 it appears that at a minimum 87 and 90 are both at 12 and 89 is at 6. anyone have an 88 to check?

Microfiche shows two part numbers for every year....I wonder if one is at 6 and one is at 12?
