Default First street bike project "INSANE CANE"

Hey guys, I've been browsing the forum for a while and first of all want to say this looks like a great helpful place! So i went a head and made an account

I picked up my first street bike a few days ago, picked it up off of craigslist for a project to work on this summer, its got 38000 but runs like a top. Needs a lot of cosmetic work. I dont have any pictures right now, but look forward to seeing a bunch of progress pics in this thread.

I started tearing into it yesterday, the tank, front fairing and fender are about the only salvagable. its missing the rear and side fairings, also they wrapped the seat in some ugly matirial so thats also going to get re-done.

My plans are to get a full tune up, custom body work and paint on plasics and tank, new custom seat, paint wheels, new tires, cut fender, and possibly a new custom rear end from a newer bike.

so far my parts list looks like this..

* 150/70-17 road pilot 2 rear tire

* 110/80-17 road pilot 2 front tire

* 520 convertion kit

* red brake and clutch levers

* hid kit

* tune up parts, fuel filter, plugs, wires, oil change, valve ajustment..ect

* aftermarket mirrors

* K&N filter

this list will grow as the project goes on.

I would like to get all the mechanical things done before i start any bodywork. does anyone has any suggestions to add for things i should do to this bike with this kind of mileage?
I have yet to buy a repair manual, im going to see if i can find one today.

Ill get pictures up later tonight!

welcome to the forum and good luck with your project.

things to do while its apart; check valve clearances, pull and clean carbs if its been sitting for a while. change engine oil, and maybe flush the brake system with new fluid.

you got any stock black mirrors?

Yeah you might as well pick up some newer plastics, it'll be a LOT easier to find, and probably cheaper too.
