Default RE: Engine rebuild or replace?

Update: The engine is out and and tore down. The # 4 piston is frozen on the rod. All pistons have severe galling along with minor scratches in the cylinders. The crank has grooves on the two journals next to the chain gear, this is along with the damage to the cases from spinning those two bearings. So now I ask you.... With the head damaged and the cases damaged am I left with no options on rebuild and left to replace the engine? Can the crank be turned and the mains alighn honed as you would with a cars engine and if so how do I now what bearings since they are all based off of some color coding. If I am left to replace then does anyone have a good rebuildable core they want to get rid of?

Check ebay. there is a couple on there right now.

Its been pretty dead on here lately. Anyone up for starting a sticky tread up top of pics of our rides like the other sections?

I am in contact with a guy on ebay right now for an '87 engine with 13,000 miles. It had sat for two years and smoked a little on initial start but not on subsequent (sp?) starts. He said he rode it for a couple of miles and it ran great with plenty of power. Next question... what was the difference in 87 - 89 engines for the HP increase?

I think the difference was cams and carbs, but I may be wrong here.

keep shopping on ebay. Looks like there are some decent ones out there right now. for parts you can try motogrid.com as I have had good luck with them in the past for my yamaha fz750. I would replace your engine if possible, unless you enjoy wrenching. Me, I would rather ride so I got a 1990 cbr 600 for $1000 and only 15k on the clock. rides like a dream. just gotta do a little work on the plastics. good luck

So I managed to find an 87 engine 30 minutes from me with a crack in the side cover (the covers were about the only thing good on my engine). I have seen the engines on ebay but a couple of them will not do shipping at all even though there ads shows a ship amount, one was in Cali and the others were in New Jersey. The other 87 I found was in MO and seemed like a good deal but I happened to find this one locally om craigs. The only catch is he needs help removing it as he does not know how but for $100.00 and only 13,000 miles I told him I would remove it myself. Can I use my 89 carbs alone or do I need to upgrade the cams at the same time? What other secrets are there to uncover for more power on our bikes, tips and tricks type of things not just power wise. I am new to Hondas as I have had Kawis up til now.

Sounds like an awesome find.

Don't quote me on this, but my understanding was that there was no difference in the motors of the f1 from 87-89, the 90 model had a 10 power HP increase due to changes in the cams and carbs. You should be fine running either carbs on your bike and just synching accordingly.

look at it this way, if you replace it with a 90 motor you might get the ten extra hp, but if you rebuild the original motor, you can bore it out and probobly get more power than 10hp. just depends on what cost more and what you willing to do I guess.

I had intended on rebuilding so that I could do an overbore and increase power any other ways I could find however, the number three main was damaged on the case from a spinning bearing. I was not left with very many usable parts. Trans and the new set of rods I got are about all that is salvageable. For future reference, JB weld is not a good repair on the bottom side of the oil pan with zero prep. The PO did not loose the drain plug but actually leaked all the oil from a make shift repair. If I ever learn how to post pics I will show the cause and effect.

Default CBR F3 Motor _Parting out

I have a motor that fits a 91-98 Honda CBR. It is actually out ot a 96 model and yes 91-98 are all interchangable. Believe me i have swapped engines out of my 91 now with a 96 engine. the one that i am parting out with had a ticking noise that we (my wife and I ) thought was the cam chain. After being told from (MSP Cycles, Lawrenceville GA) that a valve was bent I ebayed a 96 engine and dropped it in. Now i work at a shop with some technicians and after dismantling the engine they showed me that the crankshaft bearing broke and that was the noise. To make a long story short I have no use for the engine and it is disassembled. If you need parts look at my myspace page and we will get them to you.
