Default Endless chain VS. Master Link

Hi, I just bought a 1990 cbr600f. It's my first motorcycle and needs some work. It didn't come with a chain so I am in the process of finding one.

My Clymer repair manual says "do not install a master link drive chain, use only an endless chain", for strength and reliability reasons. My problem is I am having a hard time locating an endless chain. I believe the size is 530-110.

Does anyone have any ideas on where to find the correct chain, or is it sufficient to use a chain with a masterlink. Thanks for any help.

I think what they are trying to say is not to use a standard clip style master link.

My take on an endless chain is that it still has a master link, but it is swedge or translated into USE a special tool to spread the ends of the masterlink pins to lock the side plate on.

I believe that a RK530 chain is what you need. Make sure to replace the sprockets also when you do the chain. Get a can of chain wax also!

is referring to a rivet type master link verses a clip style. Clip style master links are not intended for street bikes and are bad news!!!

^ as above. The tool is not that expensive and is also used for removing the old chain(for the next one) as well. I would recommend the rivet style as I have lost the clip more than once.

I've been using a clip for 7 years now and haven't had a problem. *shrug*

Speaking of a cheap chain tool... I have only seen them for 80+ dollars... that is expensive to me. Have you guys found them anywhere cheaper?

its your leg guys

Yes a shop will install a chain for you. Catch is it has to be on the bike And any reputable shop will always use a rivet type master link

My bike pitched the clips so often I carried a spare at all times...never had an issue with the riveted style.

You can buy the "Pit Posse" tool on eBay ($40). Also, I just found out Harbor Freight carries a chain breaker that can be converted to a riveter ($9); here's a video on that one: LINK.
