Clutch Safety switch Question
ok this ones kinda wierd, could be something simple but electrical isnt my strong point, but this one is kinda weird:
trying to start it in gear, (put stand up, pull in clutch) should happen...nothing
and when i hit the starter switch the headlight goes out, but it doesnt even crank (go to neutral starts right up) so i had a bunch of parts left from a cbrf1 parts bike i bought with the hurricane, so i swapped the entire left control, i needed the choke cable so i figured what the hell, and swapped the whole thing
so now, with the clutch out in first gear, it will roll and start....which is backwards, should be able to pull in clutch and it should start, and of course first thing i thought was wires are backwards....switched em, no change
so whys my clutch switch working backwards? i mean i have no problem just goin to neutral for the start, but MA is like communist with safety stuff so i could see it being a safety issue,
so any electrical people...whats up with this?

I would check to see if something was jumpered somewhere (kickstand switch maybe) or faulty switch.
If you disconnect the wires from the clutch switch and it will still start then it is not the switch it is something further downstream.
Switching the wires won't make a difference.

ok, just did tests heres what i got
in neutral clutch out cranks/starts normally
Clutch In (neutral) starts/cranks normally
In Gear : Clutch In doesnt even crank, Clutch out drivetrain rolls and with enough room motor will start, Clutch in headlight goes out but doesnt crank
shut kill switch to off, cranks no fire (normal) pulled wires off, in gear headlight goes out but doesnt crank
now the thing is, the kickstand switch appears to be missing but it doesnt look like anythings missing, like with my dads bike, and my wifes 250 ninja, theres mount holes for the switch, and its present on both bikes, with my dads, if you put it in gear with the kickstand down, engine shuts down, the 250 the motor will stay running but if you clutch out it quits, so can anyone snap a pic of Their kickstand so i can see where and how the switch mounts (Maybe someone previous swapped my stand?) as i dont even see mounting tabs/bolt holes on the stand bracket, also where in the harness does the stand switch connect so i can look for a jumped/disconnected wire?
and the other question, if it was stuck in clutch pulled in, wouldnt it still start? why would it only work clutch out
actually i think i answered my own question......missing stand switch.....but i was thinking if the harness thinks the stand is up...wouldnt the clutch let it start?
still want opinions anyway..

Your '87 does not have a kickstand switch. The neutral switch portion of that circuit works properly so let's deal with the clutch switch portion.
"if it was stuck in clutch pulled in, wouldn't it still start?"
Yes, it should.
It sounds like you have a switch that works backwards of how it is supposed to. Maybe it was replaced with the wrong switch? When the clutch is out, the switch should be open and when clutch is pulled in the switch should be closed. Take a reading with a meter on your clutch switch with the wires pulled off. You should get the readings as previously described. If clutch switch readings are bad then replace the clutch switch. If they are good ,then I am out of ideas. Does your horn work? It shares the same grounding point as the clutch switch. Good luck!

Have you checked the trouble shooting section of your manual? I didn't know that they didn't fit the side stand switch on an 87 but if it doesn't have one in the first place then it must surely be something to do with the clutch switch. I beleive there's also a diode in the circuit. See if this is working correctly. (Voltage should only pass in one direction through it).
Wiring diagram here...

As mentioned there is no kickstand switch.

sweet guys, appreciate the help, yea, didnt look like it was supposed to have a stand switch and to answer the question, yes my horn works fine, barely have to touch it and it sounds off so im thinking it was be the clutch switch itself, ill take a better look at it because as ive changed the left controls, it was a little easier than swapping the choke cable, horn worked on both control set ups, but since the clutch handle stayed the same, its my first suspect,
and yes its totally right, its working exactly backwards as the way it should, is there a way the switch could be backwards or upside down? dont know if its possible, just asking
ill look at the wiring diagram, i dont have a manual yet but my birthday and christmas are on the way and its on my list
