Charging prob., this sucks
I bought my '88 and I love it, but it seems to not want to love me back. It killed the battery when I brought it home so I bought a new one thinking the battery was bad. Rode for about 50 miles over the past few days with no problem. Stopped today to talk to a buddy and went restart the bike and the battery was nearly completely dead after about a 30 minute ride. Let it sit for a minute and tried again. It would initially turn over but not fast enough to crank then totally dead. This is basically what happened with the last battery but then it happened after only a few minutes of riding. My buddy says it is a bad stator. I cannot even find stators for sale online. Help would be much appreciated.
Try putting up a listing for a wanted item in the craigslist.org classified, that how I found parts for my bike. I got alot of hits of people who have these bike sitting in there garage that want to part them out.
I bought a new high output stator and R/R for $135 and $90. With shipping it was $253 for both. Now I just have to wait a week to get them. I am very impatient when it comes to this kind of stuff.
Yea I know. I just want to ride. It started right up today after sitting for 10 hours. Rode for 5 minutes, came home, shut it off, went to restart and dead. I think the best thing to do is replace both parts like I intend. It may just be the R/R but I figure the stator is more than likely due too.

I know how you feel man. After buying, and loving my '89 I'm running into the same exact problem you are. Considering purchasing both a new r/r and stator, even though I may be able to get away without the stator being replaced, and I haven't even put on the new rear rotor and brake pads that I have and the bike desperately needs. Man it sucks to be down when the weather's nice...
But we gotta do what we gotta do I guess. Have you completed this project yet? If so, please let us know how it went.

Problem is fixed now. I got the r/r and stator but still had the problem. I do not know how I missed it before but the fan was hard wired and would run constantly. The temp switch is bad and this must have been the previous owners solution. I wired a toggle switch and now the fan only comes on when I want it to. Almost 2,000 miles since then and no problem.
