Default cdi questions

so i have a few questions about the brain boxes on these things.
first is are they interchangeable throughout the years or or they specific to the year or what is the compatibility between years.
The other is are the boxes for the 49 states models different from the Ca model i have an 89 CA model and just changed the engine over to the 49 states and now it wont run i have spark, i have compression, i have fuel and it is timed dead on.
that is what makes me wonder if the boxes are different that would be a pretty quick fix but it is a good bit of bread too so i dont want to get it unnessicarily

any ideas do i just need a whole new harness
any advice is apprecaited
thanks in advance

i believe the CA emissions stuff was all mechanical, nothing electrical.
if you're getting spark, your cdi isn't bad. is it a bright fat blue spark? make sure you have your coils connected to the correct cylinders. what was each cylinders compression reading? did you try spraying fuel past the carbs?

The 87 and 88 don't have the sidestand circuit so they have two less pins.

you should be able to still use an ealier cdi, and just bypass the sidestand. make sure your sidestand circuit is connected/working.
did you look inside the carbs while they were out? make sure everything is clean and setup initialy. get a few feet of fuel line, so you can connect your tank, and set it up out of the way. it should run without the airbox, that is not going to make that big of a difference.

maybe try and check the ignition timing with a timing light. see if it will even pick up a reading.
if it flashes, remove the timing plug on the right motor case
use the light and see if the "F" mark on the flywheel lines up with the index mark on the case.
i like to use a car battery and jumper cables when trying to get a bike to start. low voltage can cause alot of problems, like weak spark. you can jump it off a car, just not with the car engine running.
