CBR600 Engine Tear Down Question
Hi,
I've obtained a salvaged CBR600 engine for a dunebuggy project. I'm in the process of tearing it down to clean it up before I try to start it. I've never pulled the heads and cylinders from an engine this large before. I'm at the point where I need to remove the camshafts and was wondering if I provide slack in the timing chain, will the chain come off the teeth on the crank shaft? Or is there something that holds the timing chain on the crankshaft sprocket? If there isn't anything, how do I go about getting the chain back on the crankshaft, and back in sync with the two sprockets? I've attached a few pics.
Also, what is a good method to clean the external aluminum engine surfaces? Any suggestions?
Glen

What i do at the stage of your picture is tie a string to the chain and then unbolt both sprockets off the cams then slide them out,
once the cams are out you can remove the head just use string to keep the chain from falling down into the lower crank case, this doesn't matter if you are pulling the cylenders because the chain will just be hanging on the crank when you get down there.
the string is usefull for rebuilding to just put the string through the cylenders then the head and then once they are bolted in place pull the string and up comes the chain you will be able to place it on the crankshaft sprocket just by feel.now if you the nut that covers the end of crank and the little one next to it that will show a timming mark rotate crank untill timming mark shows up.
now at this point the I rotate the cams so that the timming marks on the cam sprockets are flat level with the head, I also find it easier to hold the sprocket in chand and then slide the sprocket onto the cam.
if you have any more questions u can email me at jcminto@gmail.com
if not happy rebuilding and new year!!
