RE: carb problems?
you even bother with those freakin metal tab things on the bottom plate of the airbox? I removed mine and TOSSED them. to me, they're only there really to serve the purpose of frustrating you, since they dont really lock the screws down as well as proper tightening will, along with regular checks, or some temporary loctite.

RE: carb problems?
Actually I am not claiming to be an expert... Nor trying to put off questions. This has only been an illustration of the disassembly of my carbs. And as the pictures reveal the inspection was necessary. Use of the lock tabs or notduring reassembly at this point is premature. Carb number two was clearly in need of the attention.
I read many threads where people were pulling the carbs first thing...and agree regular tune ups go a long way. Maybe I went in with blinders on. And very few of the threads included pictures... So I am sharing my experience. The fact that I have had the machine since new and rode it for 21 years and consider it the most reliable motorcycle in history hasn*t prevented wear and time from taking its toll.
Others sharing has encouraged me to tear it down and at least inspect the carbs.
By the way if you follow the manual I*m doing it all wrong!

RE: carb problems?
The carbs are currently soaking in cleaner... to be rinsed in hot water and blown out with compressed air. GUNK carb cleaner is amazing stuff if you have enough to completely submerge the carbs in overnight. The instant they go in you can see the residue dissolving before your eyes.

Hurricane rider, I think the purpose of the lock tabs is to prevent the screw from dislodging and entering the engine...You could imagine what a mess it could cause if a screw got on top of a piston. I will reuse them.
