total cost.

$75 for fairings on craigslist.

$30 for paint.

$400 for the bike. also on craigslist.

$150 to register.
-----------------
Total $655.

Not bad for a great running bike.

I take it the first pic (white/black) is the after pic. Good job at getting a bike on a budget. Nice DIY paint. How does the bike run?

The bike runs great only problem is the crappy walmart battery the guy I bought it from put in it. The thing is brand new but wont hold a charge for longer then 3 days. Im going to get a better one from the local motorsports shop here in Sacramento soon. Well as soon as I have $120 to spend on it.

Maybe check out the charging system to make sure it is putting out. These bikes have a well known voltage regulator/rectifier issue that may be allowing your battery to run down...

+1 on the regulator/rectifier issue.

I think it is the battery itself because if I charge the battery fully and leave it disconnected from the bike it still drains in 3 days or less. Mind you I do check the voltage with a meter. after charge is 13.2v after a couple of days its 10.82v.

i also bought a walmart battery. i recomend that no one makes this mistake. im still using it cuz my bike is kept in a warm basement. i left it in my garage in 20 degree weather one night and i turned it over about 2 and half times and it was dead. as long as the bike is warm and i dont flood it out, she starts up fine

Beautiful work! How long did it all take?

I also bought my bike (89) on Craig's List, $500. My very first bike I'm very excited even if it doesn't start. Supposedly ran prior to him letting it sit for a year+ (uncovered=rust, even in arid hell-like Las Vegas). Cleaned up carbs (allegedly only thing wrong with it) and am cleaning and inspecting anything else I can before I put it back together and try to start again. I bought and unfortunately already mixed the walmart battery. I bought it because it's what he had in there, so I knew it was the right one. It's been a few weeks sitting on my workbench, so it's probably dead again, right? lol.

Last night, I was cleaning and accidentally pulled off a piece of what turned out to be some sort of silicone style sealant which was apparently holding the engine together-j/k-sort of. So now much of the oil is in a pan on the floor. Joy. I intend to order a gasket kit and see what I can do.

Speaking of which, the thing is a mess, bolts missing everywhere, goop all over the place etc, various oddities... I would like to eventually go through and replace just about anything that's feasible, ie. hoses, plugs, gaskets/seals, washers, filters, etc. Essentially, anything that wears out. Any input on that?

Any advice on things I should specifically do or check because of it sitting for so long? In the meantime, wish me luck! (Maybe someday I'll get to start customizing it... someday)
