Is the back wheel suppose to be offset?

Hi,
I'm just putting my 87 Hurricane back together from the boxes it came in and noticed that the rear wheel is offset (when you look at the bike from the back).
I've been to bikepics.com and noticed the same thing on several 600's. Was the bike designed this way or have I put something on backwards (I am using the factory guide).
In it's day, it won alot of races so if this is how it is, I can live with it... but it just doesn't look right..
Thanks,
Mike

does the centerline of the wheel line up with the centerline of the rest of the bike? is there play side to side in the swingarm? should not be offset. could be a trick of the eye since the rear sprocket carrier hangs out so much compared to the rear brake side.
as long as the spacers were put in the proper side, wheel should be centered. if not, the chain wouldn't line up or the brake caliper would not line up with the rotor.

...and don'trely on the graduation marks on the rear axle adjusters to line up the rear wheel. They can be right out of whack, specially if some heathenhas been cruel to your baby. Use any one of the other methods like straightedge, string orlaser -both sides - to line the wheels up. (GPS,SatNav, Foucalt's pendulumetc is probably going too far). Good point about checking the spacersare the right way round... hadn't come across that one.

Look at the REAR WHEEL diagrams on a parts supplier like www.mrcycles.com or www.bikebandit.com and make sure you have all of the spacers/washers in the correct place on each side of the swingarm.

Hi,
I checked the manual and MR cycle and everything is there. Mine looks like the links below:

I'm really starting to think that the bike went down hard... It's wierd as I used a laser level and everything seems to line up..
Thanks for all your replys...
Mike

in that second pic, the rear fender is whacked.
when you ride, does the bike handle oddly, like maybe the rear wants to come around when you accelerate? if the wheel lines up then i would say subframe or rear bodywork or both are tweaked giving you the image that the rear wheel is offset.
you'll know if the rear wheel isn't lined up as when you go to turn, one side will be easier than the other or give you a weird feedback. it's kinda like riding a bicycle with a flat rear tire.
i would take off the rear bodywork and see if the frame is lining up. there are plenty of places where you can see things should be parallel with each other.
