89 cbr for $100 need help
So the other day I bought a 89 f1 off of my neighbor for 100 bucks. He said it didnt run and wished me the best. He said it hadnt been run in roughly 10 to 12 years. Gas tank is full of varnish sadly also, but i took off the tank and cleaned everything I could. Originally he told me the engine was seized but as by brother found out today it was not. The clutch does not disengage at all but if you roll the bike a little you can shift easily enough. I have not had a chance to buy a new battery to test it yet because I didnt know it was worth the 90 bucks (if someone could point me toward a cheaper replacement that would be much appreciated). Besides that the bike is physically in very good condition and only had 20k miles on it. He also told me his son had it jetted and it has a kerker exhaust on it and took very very good care of it until he got married then it sat. Sooo if someone could point me in the right direction that would excellent. Ive heard many good things about you guys

O and the key will not turn in the gas cap. Im hoping this has something to do with the gasoline not existing anymore and not just me being blind

1. key in gas tank cap won't turn most likely because of white crusty buildup on lock. basically it's corrosion. wd-40 won't cut it. put your palm on the gas cap and rock it around in a circular motion. that should break loose some of the crud. if there is any fuel left in the tank, drain it.
2. take rear bodywork off and seat. remove tank front and rear bolts. remove fuel line from filter. you can either flip the tank over and remove the petcock or just let the fuel flow out till empty. either way, once the tank is empty, put some fresh fuel into tank. it'll hold 4 gallons so don't go crazy.
3. swish the fuel around to eat away some of the corrosion on the lock. you might want to get a rag around the gas cap as fuel my leak out from there. if you can, let the tank sit upside down for a night.
4. flip the tank over, drain the fuel, and try turning the lock again.
5. if you didn't want to do the above, a good locksmith can open it for you.
that's what happens when you let something sit around a good decade.
once the tank is off, you can access the airbox. depending on how it was jetted, certain mods are made to the airbox. you'll know when you see the airbox what is going on.
i think with some patience and a good tuneup, this bike will run. it looks very good for its age. it hasn't really been negleted, just been sitting too long without any maintenance. and for a $100, you got a deal.

That a steal!! Lucky man.
First things first, Don't buy anything, Take off the gas tank, Air box, And seat.
Check your oil level, If it looks bad, change it and the filter, if it looks okay you should be fine for this trial since the engine will only run for a second or two.
Take some jumper cables, and hook it up to your cars battery (NOT RUNNING), pour just a tiny bit of raw fuel into each of the carb inlets. Now, try and start it. It SHOULD fire up for a second or so, then you know that the engine gets spark, has enough compression to run, and should be good to go with a new battery and a carb clean and tank clean.
Make sure to change the oil/filter before you start it again
Good luck! You got a steal man! Keep us updated.

well, I just tried the jumper cable thing, electrical was fine and the starter is good. then dropped the gas in and tried to start, popped twice. tried again and the engine sounded like it seized up. then something electrical poped and all the power went out. checked the fuses and they are all good. any ideas? i heard the pop up front by the fuses.
heres the carb intake not sure about the jet though lol no idea in that area.

and i will have to pick up the acid later today to try that over night.

Awesome!!
Don't rev her up too much when its cold, Its bad for the engine.
Now get yourself a can of carb cleaner and some time and some new oil, oil filter, and a good fuel filter
Take those carbs off, Take the float bowl off, and spray the cleaner through each of the jets holes, and make SURE that they are clear. Remove them and make sure you can see light through them and not gunk. If carb cleaner doesnt do it, take a SMALL wire and gently push it through.
If you have an air compressor, blow compressed air through everything.
After you do all that, throw your carbs back on. Change out that oil, and install your fuel filter (Make sure your gas lines arnt cracked or have any crude in them either, again compressed air works wonders to blow out gas lines.)
Now about the gas tank, After you do all that carb cleaning i wouldnt run that tank on there til you clean it up good. What are we talking about is in it? Just crud or rust?
If its crud just wash it all out as good as you can.

there was a lot of crap blowing out of the exhaust lol but yeah theres some sort of black sludge. the fuel valve is completely clogged and i cant see anything due to the gas cap not coming off. but the stuff i dumped out of it the other day was just orangish. and what type of gas is best to run is these old bikes?
