first and foremost, download the haynes service manual. It can be found in the forum.

Second, Give your carbs a GOOD Cleaning (without seperating them in the rack). Meaning you have to take the float pins out and remove the floats. Place the floats in a cub of gasoline and make sure that they actually float.

Remove the float needle seats and clean the screens that are on it.

Remove your main jet and pilot jet, make sure they are good and clean, look through them and make sure you can see light and that theres no debris inside them.

Take compressed air and blow out every single little hole in the carb. never know what kinda creepy crawlies or debris could have gotten up there.

as far as the screws go, go pick up yourself a nice allen key head set of carb screws (these come included if you purchase a jet kit from Factory Pro).

After re-assembly, set your idle mixture screws to 2 and 3/4 turns out.

and go from there.

You should also have a sync done, this can be done by eye with the carbs removed, however will still be off a very slight amount but will do until a proper sync is done.

hmmm, i would check and see if you have the boots on there securely, as the vaccum from the engine should be pulling fuel out from the pilot. Unless you have an improperly adjusted pilot. I assume you tried turning the idle screw up a bit to allow more air in when starting? Reason i ask if the throttle plates are completely closed then its not going to start.
