Default tachometer problems

I got an '05 1000rr in which my tachometer has aproximately 8 spots that have actually melted over the last 10 months, they are all about 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, where the tach needle goes at different rpm's. honda wont warranty the fix but knows about this problem, and states it is from the environment. has anyone had this problem with there bike, and if so were you able to get honda to fix it under warranty? my local shop says it is a problem and is not environmental, but that honda will not cover it, and there is nothing they can do. if anyone has any information please let me know.

Do you have an aftermarket double-bubble type windscreen? I've heard that some windscreens can focus sunlight (similar to a magnifying glass) and melt the guage cluster.

I do have an after market zero gravity double bubble smoke windscreen, however the problem started with the original clear windscreen and continued with the aftermarket windscreen. also, the gauge is not being damaged just a small area where the tachometer needle goes from between 3000 rpm to 8000 rpm, with no other damage to any other area of the tachometer/speedometer.

Are the bubbles on the clear plastic cover or the actual face of the tachometer, underneath the needle?

they are underneath the actual face of the tachometer/tachometer needle. with no other damage anywhere else.

if the melting spots are on the cover itself you can replace that part. no need to replace the entire gauge assembly.

the cloth i carry in my tail for my helmet gets put over my dash every time i have to leave the bike outside in the sun for extended periods of time.
