rpm's
i guess i may just be used to cars and not high reving bikes. but is cruising at 85mph for an hour or so ok.. i mean i guess you dont have a choice it just seems like keeping high revs for so long may not be good? and like going through the neighborhoods. i usually go to like 3rd or so just cruising around 15 - 20 mph. should i stay in 1st or second and keep the revs up around 3,000? just a newbie bike question i guess. thanks.

RE: rpm's
huummmm well,
at 85 you should be in top gear, unless your racing or trying to be in the power band (7-12krpm)
around town my recomendation is to keep the bike between 3000-4500 rpm, lower than 3k and you will lag quite a bit, and if you need to hit the gas and move out of a bad spot quickly you wont be able too.
and remember theses bikes were made to beat on so to speak. if you have good oil, and do your reg. maintanence you could pretty much drive all day at 9-12krpms and be just fine. i have spent many a day at the canyons and track close to redline all day.
Dont worry about it my friend, if your doing something the bike dosnt like, you WILL know it. Trust your instincts.

RE: rpm's
I think of it like this:
Let's say your car redlines at 6,000 rpm. At 85 mph in top gear, usually the car is anywhere between 3,000 - 3,500 rpm (half the rpm range)
Now, the CBR's redline is about 15,000 rpm. At 85 mph in top gear, the bike is usually at around 7,000 - 8,000 rpm (also, half the rpm range)
But, that's just the way I look at it. Anyway, I usually keep my bike in the 5,000 rpm range when driving around the city. You still get good gas milage (like I care) and still have enough power on tap to get out of a tight situation.
Hope that helps
