Default Redline

Tonight I was riding with my buddies back from Hooters when we hit a straight part of a road, and we jumped on the throttle a little. Normally I don't bring by rps's past 8 or 9K, but tonight I brought it to about 10 1/2 and the Rev Indicator light came on as I was about to shift into 6th. Since this is the first time I've seen it come on, my question for everyone is it doing any damage to my engine. The Rev Indicator light is yellow instead of red, so I'm thinking it comes on around 11K to warn that you need to shift. Is this correct, or should the Rpm's always stay below 11K? The bike in question is a 2005 CBR1000RR that shows redline at 11 1/2.

Disclaimer: No I wasn't drinking and No I don't normally try to redline my bike, and yes the waitress at Hooters was hot. I got a pic if anyone wants to see.

Sounds like your shift light came on and yes, it's adjustable. Reving your motor to redline wont hurt it unless you ride there for a VERY long time. I take my bike to the track and it's all wide open throttle. I've logged probably 1500 track miles all at or near redline and no ill effects so.........you're fine. Adjust your shift light a little higher so it's accurate and enjoy.

As long as the motor is warm, a visit to redline is probably good for the motor. My S2000 won't go into vtec until it is partially warmed up, my guess it would be good practice on a bike to to let is warm up before redlining it.

depends on the bike. mine (05 1000rr) you have to hold both the select and reset buttons below to odometer and then turn the ignion on. after the tach has swept the rpm range it will return to the factory preset and then you can adjust it to higher or lower by pressing the reset button (i think). ive got mine set at about 8500 to tell me that im in the powerband

Definatly the shift light. You can adjust it through a certain range (~8000 - 11,000) etc.
Also you can chose the brightness and flash patterns.

Redline is not good for a motor, obviously. Instant damage? usually not. Will it last longer if it never goes over 5000rpm? Probably.

Did you buy a sportbike with lots of power to go fast? Yup. Then feel free to use all the power you've paid for.

Redline isn't a problem, but try to avoid hitting the limiter often. Causes engine nasties
