Police Radar Detector

I would like to invest in a Radar Detector to mount on the windshield of my 06 1000RR. Anyone has any feedback on the subject? I saw this "Escort Solo S2 Cordless Radar and Laser Detector" on Amazon, what do you think? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...&s=electronics, let me know...

RE: Police Radar Detector

My research shows the Bell RX65 and the Valentine V1 as the top rated choices for bikes. Check out www.radarbusters.com

I'm also looking for feedback from those who have the products listed above.

RE: Police Radar Detector

Got good marks from "Radar Roy". I've attached his run down on all tested models. I'm going with the RX65. Interesting website, you should check it out. One day I may invest in a laser jammer, but for now, I spend most of my time in the twisties over Malibu and they use radar, not laser.

Detector Rating Overview

Bel RX65
Without question, the best detector Radar Roy has ever tested!

This newest detector from Beltronics can be best described as an Escort 8500 X50 with voice and with Ku band for European radar bands. Outstanding detector, good POP detection on K and Ka bands.

Bel STi Driver
The first radar detector designed for the Professional Driver!

The first all band zero leakage detector that defeats all radar detector detector devices including the Spectre III Mark 3, the Spectre II and VG2.

Also has the top Ka band range of any radar detector Radar Roy has ever tested.

Escort
8500
In our testing, and the testing of several major testing companies, the Escort 8500 is the leader of the pack! Combined with the superior range the Escort 8500 has on picking up radar signals, with its superior filtering capabilities, earns the Escort 8500 a five star rating. Flash upgradable by Escort.

Escort
Solo 2
Escort's Newest Detector that is cordless! This is without question the #1 cordless detector ever made! Downside is that the display is a little difficult to read in bright sunlight and the sensitivity on Ka is not as good as the 8500. Upside, unit is very user friendly and if you need a cordless this is the unit! However we would still recommend getting the Smart Cord to save yourself some money on all those batteries however.

Beltronics
RX55
A good value radar detector in the low $200 range. Does not have the filtering the higher end Escorts or Beltronics units have. So you will have good range, but more false alerts.

Passport SR-7
Escort's concealed radar detector and what Radar Roy uses in his personal vehicle! Escort sells this unit for $1099.95 and rated as the #1 concealed detector.

Bel RX75
Beltronics top of the line concealed radar detector. This is almost a twin to the SR7 in performance

BEL 995

The BEL 995 is an international detector, meaning that is has all the frequencies used in overseas markets that include Europe and Asia.

Valentine 1

We do not sell the Valentine 1, however as many people consider this radar detector the bench mark of radar detectors we do test it. The Valentine 1 is an excellent unit with excellent range and filtering. The big drawback in our opinion is the price as it costs $399.00 In testing, the Escort 8500 outperformed the Valentine 1 in range and filtering. Upgradable by Valentine

Whistler Pro 73
Outstanding POP detection at a good price! An outstanding performer for the $$$

PNI
Traveller II
Bel and Escort watch out! There is a new kid on the block! Copper plated antenna! Only downside with this detector is the filtering is not as good as the Escort.

PNI
Traveller
Same detector as the Traveller II but without voice.

Whistler Pro 58
Good POP detection, and range. Good value for the $$$

BEL 975R
The Bel 975 R is Beltronics concealable unit. If consealability is an issue, this is an excellent choice for a great radar detector.

Downside, the laser sensors are designed to be mounted on the windshield. Laser is normally directed at the front license plate or headlamp. This will cause many lost laser hits!

Bel
Express

>Our number one choice for an easy to use radar detector on a motorcycle. It comes accessorized with a pocket reflector and helmet speaker.

Whistler 3450
Tested at the Speed Labs 2003 Rad

RE: Police Radar Detector

any tips on mounting it & hooking it up to the bike?

westlakeCBR1KRR 05-18-2006 08:47 PM

RE: Police Radar Detector

regarding mounting, I would google for a handlebar type mount. They make them specifically for GPS and radar detectors. Going rate is around $60. Regarding connecting to the bike, you can hard wire the thing to your acc input on the fuse box, or, and I've done this before, go to Radioshack and buy a cigarette lighter socket and just use the power cord that comes with the detector. Check this out for instal instructions. http://www.whybike.com/blog/index.php?p=104

Good luck.

Afraid of getting A ticket. You have a couple of choices 1.out run him.Or get rid of the bike.Radar detectors is just a gadget that cost a lot of money. My experince they will not save you.At hyper speeds they are useless

RE: Police Radar Detector

Not what I'd call sage advice. #1, you are a fool to try and outrun the police. Be a man and take the ticket. Beats being arrested for evading, losing your license and insurance, and potentially injuring yourself or an innocent motorist or pedestrian.

I ride frequently on the PCH with a buddy who has the BMW K1200S (a beast of a bike). He has a Valentine V1 and it's saved us numerous times. Obviously, a detector won't ever be 100%, but if used wisely, and if you ride smart, you will avoid being popped.

RE: Police Radar Detector

Wirring seems very complicated, concidering that the example given is not on CBR 1000. + it might affect my battery & electrical system. Already bought Escort S2 battery operated radar, & will mount top of my wind shield, as soon as i receive it. Some even suggested keeping it in my pocket located above my knee, we'll see...

RE: Police Radar Detector

If you mount to your winshield, which is not the safest bet, make sure you use a "dummy" cord to secure it if it falls or you will see your investment bouncing down the road.

No all of US officers use RADAR. There are other devices that are used. Vascar, Accutrak, and ESP to name a few. I would be a liar if I said I never have speeded or rode a wheelie. The best thing to do is just pull over and take the ticket. Most the time you will catch a break!

RE: Police Radar Detector

I agree with you that trying to evade a ticket and take part in a high speed chase is wrong. In 1984 I belive it was while riding my Kawasaki Ninja 900 I decided to give it a try.Hitting speeds of 130mph + in a 30 mph speed zone turned out to be the wrong choice.Hit a turn that still had sand on it from the winter and my bike slid. When I woke up the bike was bent in half there were 4 police vehicles on location and about twenty people just checking out the mess.I broke three ribs punctured my lung cut and brusies every place and some bad road rash.I was alive and no one else was hurt.I received community service that I served with the American Cancer Society.500 dollars in fines lost my liscence for six months and was out of work for about the same.
Two years ago while coming home from work at about three in the AM I had my 954 and was clocked at 135mph.Pulled right over wasnt going to run at 45 yrs old my bones dont heal as well at that age.I was arrested and my bike got taken away. What happened next really sucked. You see in new york state if you have a cdl liscence and you get banged and loose your liscence they dont give temps to go back and forth to work.Without my CDL I would have lost my job.I went and got the best lawyer I could find and several thousand dollars latter the reckless driving, speeding ,and an assortment of others was settled so I could keep my CDL.You would think at 47 yrs old I would mellow out,get wiser or buy a Harley or something.I am addicted to these supperbikes and I love my 06 1000.It sits in my garage and I just wax it.Its safer and cheaper that way.My advice to anyone who makes a living out of driving, think twice.Buy a Hog or take it to a track.Or just wax it and keep it in the garage and start it now and then.

RE: Police Radar Detector

I bought a Sensoro Traveler off Ebay for a reasonable price and it is cordless and takes two AA batteries and also has a power cord for in the car use. I bought this one because it was the only one I could find that has an ear plug jack also has volume control. I don't really use the ear plug though because the wind blows the cord around too much. For mounting I use the sucksion cups taht came with it. If you stick it up high on the inside of the fairing it is easyer to see and hear but it bounces too much but stays in place no problem. I decided to stick down lower against the top of my guage console and there it dosn't bounce at all but can scuff the glass of the console, so I stuck a small strip of the soft side of some velcrow to the bottom edge of the radar detector for a non scratch padded cusion. The only down side to this location is that it partially blocks the view of the top of the tach as the needle goes up but that dosn't bother me because I know when to shift and can hear the bike reving. The unit can be hard to hear in the wind when speeding but if you are hauling arse you have to get used to watching for the lights to start flashing if it picks up a radar gun. I do like having it and it has served it's purpose and saved me some tickets but you have to be ready to hit the breaks. Check my pics if you want to see it.
Good Luck
