For the first part of the break in I have found that keeping the rpm's lower for the first couple hundred miles is a must otherwise you get a clunky motor. I have had Honda's for many years and have tried all different ways to break the bike in and have found keeping under 7-8 k for the first 200 is critical, after that you can really vary the rpm's, they key being VARIOUS speeds and rpm's.
i have bought these bikes brand new
86 gsxr750
77 hurricane 600
89 zx 7
92 gsxr 1100
93 900rr
96 900rr
98 r1
01 996
02 r1
06 1000 rr
staring with the 93- they were broke in on the dyno-btw my bikes bone stock usually put out more ponies to being broke in this way,to redline i might add-clunky motors if taken over 7k rpms-that aint seating the rings properly for 1- never had any engine noise , engine issues on the 93 and on up- your comment is based on what?as long as rpm isn't held at 1 spot and shifted with frequency- you will have no problems

take care of her! one bad **** piece of machinery! let her breath during the break in so its not a complete surprise when you let her rip after the 500.

Interesting side conversation. I dont pretend to know everything about breakingin a motor, but my understanding is you're really looking to vary the rpm so as to vary the pressure and forces on the rings. This is definitely one of those religion type conversations on babying an engine vs. being too agressive and ruining it. Car engines dont even require break-in anymore, so I'm not sure whether or how much the rules have changed in the last 10 years or so.

I sortof prefer to let the engine be in a constant flux of acceleration and deceleration; at the very least this means simply building slow revs and then releasing the throttle on decel; otherwise its just moderate to spirited runs up and down the gears. But I also like to give the engine the occasional run-up to a slight higher rpm than i am limiting myself to overall. Break-in cycle wise, limit the engine to 60% max rpm, then 80 % max rpm , again, with the occasional run-ups to a higher level, then let er rip around 500 or so and change the oil.

What do you guys recommend.

take two stock bikes- dyno them with 100 miles on em stock-then baby one as recommended- then run one up to redline, varying rpms alot-do this for say 1000 miles-then redyno and see which one makes better numbers from their previous runs

openclasspro & rbiker

You two should wip them out, take pictures next to rulers and pm them to each other. This should help solve the discussion.

Otherwise

$13,200 OTD. Repeat customer at that shop. Dont know if that was particularly good or bad. They were the first shop in the area to have them. Salesman said a non-repeat customer paid closer to 14k.
