Default My first bike is a liter bike, first year review...

For what it is worth, all the warnings on the board that you should not get a 1000rr as a first bike made me EXTREMELY cautious in my first couple of months of ownership. I definitely respected the power (still do) without being timid.

I grew up on a 125 so I did have bike experience. But it was about 17 years since I had last rode but I really had the itch to get a bike. I knew that I would buy a 600 and outgrow it quickly. I am glad I stepped up to the 1000 right away. I have had no issues or close calls so it has worked out well.

Gotta say, these bikes are a blast.

I started on a F4 then a 600rr and now a 1000rr. The 1000 was completley different from the 600 but I got used to it. Just respect it and you'll be alright

I started on a Cbr 600 f4 too which i still have and ride. But today i just got my 08 yellow and black CBR 1000rr.
Being very causious with my throttle hand. Im assuming its not as forgiving as a 600f4 with a fat bastard on it lol.
You guys have any cautions/ advice for me?

What kind of differences did you notice?

I'm *not* looking to upgrade yet I'm just curious.

as an owner of a 600 and a 08 1000RR I don't see your point of "out growing" a 600.

Unless your 600 is from 1980 any 2000+ 600 is more then you will EVER need on the street, which is faster then 99% of the car's on the road and you can get yourself into plenty of fun and trouble on that bike.

That being said I Love my 1000RR but if I lost it "and it did get stolen" The f4i is more then enough bike for me to have and never get tired of. Sure I LOVE the extra power the 1k makes and I enjoy riding it more then my 600. But that doesnt mean the 600 is slow, outdated or in any way a bike you would EVER have to "upgrade"

just my 2 cents.

p.s. I don't care what anyone says starting on a 1000 is stupid. I'm glad you made it and Im sure lots of people "can"... That doesnt make the decision less stupid.

1000rr is alot snappyer, but im still breaking it in, im sure it gets crazy at higher RPMs. I did notice you have to keep both hands on the handle bars at all times :P Also the suspension is great on this bike. I like the stiff setup out of the box, and the bike seems really easy to turn. Overall i agree with Roger. 600 is plenty, especially if you run it in the high rpm range.

You Probrobly would lol, Ive been looking at numbers concerning lap times of the AMA, and race tracks with alot of turns like Laguna Seca have very close times comparing 600s and 1000s...... And the fact that my skills are are subpar on the 1000 currently :P

Fastest 1000 is only 2.2 seconds faster then the fastest 600.. granted these are race bikes but number are still very close.
Unofficial Superbike test session lap times
  • Mat Mladin - Suzuki - 1:24:2
  • Jamie Hacking - Kawasaki - 1:24:6
  • Neil Hodgson - Honda - 1:24:8
  • Jason DiSalvo - Yamaha - 1:24:9
  • Eric Bostrom - Yamaha - 1:25:3
  • Miguel Duhamel - Honda - 1:25:9

Everything is what you make of it. If you have the patience to acclimate to the extra power of the 1k bike then it isn't stupid. Certainly using your "manual governor" on the throttle means the bike would perform like a 600 - nobody was forcing me to challenge myself with full throttle and getting into the high rpm powerband.

I realize that some don't have the smarts or the patience to respect the power of a liter bike until you are well into the comfort zone. That is how I went about easing into my bike. You are right, for those think they are indestructable or have the need for constant thrill of extreme edge driving then starting with a liter is dumb. They should start with a dirt bike if they have those issues anyway, stay off the streets.
