How long to install slip on
I'm thinking about tinkering with my bike tonight and installing a slip on.
Does any one have input on how long you think it will take? I haven't even started looking yet, but I really want to hear the thing and ride it in the morn. I have to get up early, so 10 o'clock may not be a good time to start. |
RE: How long to install slip on
You can do it inside 1 hour easy. providing you have tools and mechanically inclined. I fitted a full race system inside an hour. But hey i been doing this sort of thing all my life.

Thanks,
I'm on it. Finding tools in my mess of a garage may make it difficult to match your one hour time, but I'll skip out on some sleep to do this. |
RE: How long to install slip on
Well,
I couldn't do it in an hour. I was on pace til I started screwing with the exhaust servo valve. I didn't realize it had a cover, so I wasted quite of bit of time there trying to unscrew the cable. Even after I realized that, I couldn't get a damn wrench on the top cable nut. Finally got it. What's sending me to bed? I can't get the damn mid-pipe from D&D on the muffler. It's painted black, so I guess I'm gonna have to go back at it after I have some more patience. Need to tweak the mid-pipe to get it started or sand the paint off the muffler a few mm from the ends. Anyway - I'm going to bed. Thanks for motivating me to tear into my bike. Guess I'll take the truck tomorrow. haha. |
RE: How long to install slip on
You Done yet?
If not you Know you need to mark the exhaust valve servo motor so it can be returned to its starting position? Or you`ll get the Fi Light come on. [:'(] |
RE: How long to install slip on
dam - no! I didn't know this! I just got home today and was gonna finish up tinkering with the thing tonight.
What do you mean I need to mark the servo valve? Can you explain a bit more or provide a link? I didn't think they made bikes smart enough yet to sense this emisions stuff. Am I screwed? I already removed it. Thanks for the warning! I'll search around the net, cause I figure most guys are out riding if the weather is like it is here. |
RE: How long to install slip on
Anubis, by the way... I unscrewed just the cables to this point and removed the stock
exhaust. I'm getting ready to put the new exhaust on, but your question has me a bit concerned. I wasn't totally clear on the design of the exhuast servo cables when I started, so I just kept unscrewing the clamp bolt from the outside on the bottom one. I expected it to eventually unseat the cable and I'd be halfway there (top one left). After threading the thing out for an eternity, I realized there was a cover and unscrewed it. Removed the cables from inside the pulley. I didn't actually tinker with the valve that pulls or pushs the calbles. Am I OK at this point? I want to install the new exhaust and get riding and remove the actual servo later. Will I be able to remove it later based on what I described or did I screw up the factory settings and won't be able to "mark" it like you described? Thanks! |
RE: How long to install slip on
Done. Took it for a ride afterwards.
No light. Only went a couple miles, tired and a few beers in me to deal with the damn fitment of the mid pipe to can. It took me a couple hours to tweak the flanges and sand the paint off the male part of can's pipes. Pain in the arse! In the end, the pipe sounds awesome. Didn't want to wake all my neighbors up so I went easy. Can't wait til tomorrow. I'll let it rip then. Can anyone point me in the right direction with regards to the exhuast servo? Do I need to do something else based on my previous posts. Any help would be appreciated. |
RE: How long to install slip on
So you installed a D&D slip-on.... I have one coming next week.... It seems to be a lil pain so if you would please give me all the pointers and advice you can on the great install...

J-
The only real pain was getting the muffler to slide into the mid pipe. Disconnecting the servo cable delay was cause I didn't realize I should remove the cover to get the cables off. Just remove the cover and back the cable nuts off a bit. Not sure what the concern is with the servo, but I rode it about 60 miles today and no light or problems. My advice if you have trouble with the midpipe to muffler fitment is to take some time to sand the first 10mm or so of engagement on the muffler pipes where they enter the midpipe. If yours aren't painted maybe you'll have no problems. I sanded the paint (or black oxide - whatever it is) off and spent some time tweaking open the pipes on the muffler side of the mid-pipe. Once I did this it slid in a whole lot better. The fit of the midpipe onto the exhaust header was fine. I'd try sanding first to see if you can avoid having to tweak the opening of the midpipe. Will make it easier to put the clamps on if you don't have to open it up. I used a flathead to spread out the opening. Not sure if sanding would have been enough. Good luck. It's worth it in the end. The pipe sounds great. |
