Default Air Filter

I was thinking about putting a K&N air filter on my 2006 1000RR but my buddy who has an 04 said he put one on his and it ran like sh*t, and some errorlight kept coming on in his display cluster. Does anyone have any input or experience with an aftermarket airfilter on a newer bike?

I have an 05 1000, put a K&N filter on the same time I put my RS-5 on noticed power gain and better responce. Also got a better sound, no lights or anything strange like that had it on the bike over a year now and everything has been good.
