My bike has slightly over 3000miles i have heard of people waiting till 5000miles to change it since it is the break in period and it is full synthetic so.So when do u guys normally change yours because i know some people change there oil and are **** about it but that is beingwasteful changing too soon? What do u guys think? O idont have an owners manual yet how much oil does it takefor a filter and oil change? Thnks guys

 

changed mine at 500 and 1500 and then im gonna at 3000 and every 3 after but thats me and at 5 and 1500 it looked brand new but i plan on keeping for a long time so im overcautiuos

 

I changed at like 780 (I rode it A LOT first couple days and missed the 600 mile mark I had planned to change it, lol) and then... that's it... haha... so far. I think I am at 2700 miles right now. Will change again at about 3000

 

Considering how hot these engines run, the power they put out for thier size, and how fast they turn I changed my oil the first time at 400 miles (the 600 mile service was done at this time), then again at 1500 miles and am going to do my 3000 mile service at 2700 miles. I maintain airplane engines that have high compression and put out a lot of HP for the cubic inches, likethe 1000 CBR. I changethe airplane engine oil every 50 hours. The point is, I think, is that fresh oil is a great way to keep the engine running tight. I think the recommended oil change times in the CBR service book are way too spread apart.

 

8,000 miles between oil changeswith an engine like this seems crazy. Maybe this is part of their happy Earth Dreams campaign, and they know we'll all change our oil a lot sooner.

 

And yet Honda are quite happy to give a (two year in Europe) warranty and only expect the oil to be changed every 8,000 miles - and they know how fast the engines turn, they developed and tested them after all.
More importantly than mileages is the conditions; if you do lots of short journeys and only a couple thousand miles a year and live in a dusty area, then change it more often. More damage can be done by letting crap get in the filler whilst changing the oil than what the engine does to itself.
Saying that however, I change mine aroundevery 5kand againbefore storing it during the winter.

 

The greatest amount of wear happens during the first several hundred miles, new crankshafts, piston wrist pins, cams, lifters, etc. are wearing/rubbing against each other for the first time. Those very small metal shaving which result are an abrasive and lead to excessive wear. My thinking was that the first oil change was critical, then changing the oil every 1500 miles or so seems about right, just looking at this from a practical point of view, ie. cost vs. benefit. I intend to keep my bike for many years, if I intended to get a new one every year then maybe I would care less.But, then again, my bike deserves better for what it delivers. It is kinda like, treating the bike with the respect it deserves. I am not bashing those who differ with my point of view, this is simply my point of view.

 

Yeah, and they are very unhappy to replace your engine or cover any major engine work for wear related issues. The extra wear from going 8000 miles between oil changes isn't catastrophic enough for your engine meet their manufacturing defect criteria. Even if it did, they'vegot a list ofother excusesthey can use to deny you coverage. It doesn't cost Honda anything to specify an excessively long oil change interval, but they get two benefits from doing this. 1. It suggests Honda enginesare amazingly well engineered. 2) Hondalooks green, and who doesn't love that?

The bottom line is thata two year warranty gives you no assurances that an8000 mile oil change interval isharmless to your engine.

 

Robert is spot on, the first one at 500 miles or so is very important to get shavings out from the pistons seating, etc, etc. I also personally do it again at approx 1000 miles (what are the odds of all if it getting caught the first time) then i proceed to regular intervals.
