mex69, you'll get about 10-15 more MPGs with a 600 versus a 1k. But, ride what you like, that's what I always say.

I commute everyday, and have the same pros and cons as stated above. My auto gets about half the mileage I get on my bike (or less), but with my bike moderate riding I get about 38 around town and about 43 on the highway.

 

I was commuting every day to work (before the rains and cold). It got to a point that it was too cold working swing shift. I can ride in the rain safely but it's an emegency manuver that you have to worry about. Backpacks are a pain but I will try an Axio hard pack when I get a chance. I didn't want to ride on the weekends as much when I rode daily. The drawbacks are getting too comfy which changes you from an offensive mode to defensive. Cars don't signal and don't look, so it pays to be a little paranoid. Long rides will will make you sadle sore allthough supposedly '07 seats are better then '05. If you do more then 1/2 hour then look into a Corbin seat or maybe some gel instead of the foam. Gas milage is good but filling up all the time sucks. Make sure you dress to go down. I see guys every day with open jackets, short jeans and girl tenis socks, no gloves. Daamn, these guys are in for a worl of hurt when they get cut off or hit some fluid!

I've had a bike as my only transportation for a year and a half now. Rain, Freezing slush and even snow. Never had a problem. A year of that has been on an 06 1000rr.

Gas mileage, I honestly have observed that the new litre bikes get better gas mileage on average than the 600's. Im not saying you can whomp on a 1krr and get 45 but on my average rides I get 42-45mpg. My buddy's 07 ZX6R (although he's always catching up) gets 35-40.

Cargo net is a must, but I commonly ride with a 12 pack of bottles on the back of my bike without any problems.

Get the 1000rr you wont be dissapointed.

I have an 06 Black 1K RR and it is my main transportation all year round. I got it November of 06 and it already has 18528 miles on it. yeah i go everywhere on it. The only thing is that you have to constantly have to be watching the weather reports or just go to a site like yahoo and click on weather. Get that hoopty, it will help in those rainy weeks, other than that, with the proper gear you can stand any cold weather minus snow (don't recommended). about dates rent a car or borrow a car, I'm sure you got friends that trust you enough.

Corbin seats will save you some pain
Check your brake pads (depending on wich brake u use the most on the bike)
anyone knows we can't relax while riding so just watch it
Get a good back pack that suits you and like vpsophmore put it " If it doesn't fit in your back pack learn to live without it.

i live in the daytona beach area, so the only problem i've had is traffic. it has been a very warm winter with only 3-4 nights approaching 32 degrees. i try to ride everyday, even rainy ones. the traffic issue is that my bike seems to get hot. around 220-225. and even when the fan comes on, the only way to cool down is to get moving. i ride michelin road 2ct's and they work great. and like someone told me.....there is nothing cool about a head injury. wear your helmet and gear, always.

 

I've got pictures of the gear that saved my hide (literally), but you'll have to wait until next week for them, and that was at 30, I can't imagine highway speeds.
