Sounds like the bike may be flooding - have you ever cleaned the carbs ?

Why the new battery ? Did you have starting probs before ? How good is your regulator ? These bikes only charge above 3000 RPM with a standard reg/rec...............
Some more details would help - the slow return to idle sounds like throttles are sticking - easy to fix with some Q20 on the throttle springs.
May even be a dodgy throttle cable - ?
Who knows....................?

Good info there. May need to upshift less when noodling around.

If you're ever below 3k, and you're moving.... you're doing it wrong.

It's only because it has so much torque that you can do this. And since I hate to abuse my equipment, I usually let it loaf when I'm stuck at 40 or so. I'll change. I swear.

I've heard it all before....

It won't hurt it one bit. It's made for it.
Lugging is the abuse.

Trout, I haven't lugged an engine since 1969. I think you are projecting.

You're right, Joe. I'm projecting....
I shift at 3k rpms.
And this bike has tons of low-end torque.
I know because you told me..... and you know because you've been riding since 1969.

Odd place to shift. Don't you know how gearing works?
