Wheel Bearing Problems?
I don't have problems but we're getting up in miles, 36,000. Have any of you out there had any issues with bearings? The only reason I ask is because I had to replace the wheel bearings on my '73 CB500F and a few dirt bikes some years back. Has Honda been using a better grade of bearings?
Better grade? Dunno about that but bearings nowadays are sealed in their own grease so no fear of em getting contaminated or drying out.
Dirt bike bearing are obviously gonna take a pounding so expect them to fail before those of a road bike.
My CBR had new bearings fitted front and back including sprocket carrier at 49,000 miles. Not because they needed changing but because I was going on a 2,500 mile european tour so just wanted peace of mind.
If in doubt, just change em, they don't cost much.

I just bought my 93 CBR with 42k miles a month ago. The previous owner said the front wheel bearing did go out on him during a long trip, but I dont know the mileage that it occurred. Good news is, thats the only problem he ever had with the bike!!
Hmmm. Second try. About 37,000 on my '91. Strange sounds up front turned out to be dry, rusty bearings. Rears were great. Either someone replaced the rears, or the front seals died early. About $140 from Honda for the complete set of bearings and seals. Now I have new bearings waiting for the rear bearings to die.
This time I'm going to copy this before hitting post.

Mine front wheel bearings went out on my 1KF a couple of years ago while on a trip to the Leesburg Bikefest. You can pick up a set of bearings from your local bearing distributor.
They're a very common size, part number 6004-2RS (the 2RS means 2 rubber seals) and used in many industrial applications. You can also get them from ebay for about $5 each including shipping. It takes about 30 minutes to change them including removing the wheel from the bike.
