Valve Adjustment Question
Just inspected/adjusted valve clearances and quite a few of them were out of spec. Followed the Honda manual. Changed plugs while I was in there... gapped to spec, torqued to spec. Got some plug wires crossed, and of course ran really rough. Got them sorted out and seemed to run fine. Got out on the road today and it just sounded "wierd". This is the first time I've done the valves on this bike. I've had it for about 8000 mi. I've done valves on my old ninja 500 and it ran a little funny for a while. Is this the same thing? Should I be concerned?

If all is to spec then it will run perfectly right away.
Memebers here will no doubt be in a better position to help you if you give better description than sounding "weird".

Do you have full power?
Is the same sound in nutral as is under load?
Where is the sound comming from?
Is the sound at all revs?

Yeah, a little more info on the "weird" sound would help.
I'm always a little concerned after I set valves on anything. Just kinda the nature of the beast, I think.
However, if you were meticulous about how you did it.... and made sure to recheck a couple times after adjustment.... you're probably fine.

I'm sure the carbs do need balancing. I triple checked clearances after torquing the lock nuts. I spent some time on the bike trying to come up with a way to describe how different the sound was... and all I could really come up with was that it sounds a little lower in the low to mid revs. It just doesn't sound quite right. I should mention that the idle was a little rough before I adjusted the valves. I'll do the carb sync and let you all know.
All of the things I have seen have shown a vacuum gauge with four leads. Can I perform the sync with the gauge that I have that has one lead?

If the bike sounds deeper in tone, it may indicate that it is running stronger due to the valve adjustment. If some of the valves were to tight, the cylinder may not have had proper compression. If some were to loose on the intake side, not enough air/fuel mixture may have been entering causing a week burn. A deep tone indicates a strong engine. If it is running smooth, the job was well done.
If you are going to balance the carbs, Boab is correct, you need a 4-hose set up. How can you balance #1, #3 and #4 to #2 with only one hose? The answer is you can't do it correctly.

Depending on the year of your bike - there are two different styles of carb sets.
Early models = Style 1 - has the vacuum pickup on top of the carbs - as in the movie above.
Later models = Style 2 - has the vacuum pickup on the bottom of the carbs.
