Unhappy total failure

hi all, would like to pick your brains if i may, this story may take some time so bare with me please!!!. last august i bought my first cbr 1000f an 1989 model which i buoght sold as seen with no sevice history but everything seemed to be running fine with only 30,000 on the clock, frame and bodywork, tyres all in good nick so everything was fine for first few months until i decided to use my little 125 for the winter and put the 1000 away. About 2 or 3 weeks after on a nice sunny day i decided to take the big one out for a run, but try as i may could not get it started even after charging the battery. It seemed like it wanted to start but got alot of backfiring.
So it was at this point i decided to get the problem sorted by a local backstreet machanic and also for him to do a full service???? (god what a mug i was). He said it was a carb problem and that he had sorted it!!!, changed the plugs and oil, and a new battery was fitted as the old one was knackered???. i took him at his word. things seemed to be fine for a day or two until it wouldnt start again, i soon relised that the only work that had been done was the oil change, (bloody bastard) i would have ripped him a new ****!!! but he has got some really ugly mates and a bigger baseball bat than me!!! so i put it down to experince. So anyway ive now got a new battery, new plugs, and a battery optimiser and everything seems to fine??? it starts first time, (sometimes with a little choke) but a lot better than it ever was, so took it out the other day for a good run and everything was fine, about 60 mile round trip, so you can imagine i was very happy?? until the following day when i went to work, (about 3 miles away) it suddenly died on me at a very low speed this has now happened twice, as you can imagine this would be a little scary in the fast lane of a motorway. i have since checked the plugs and found 2 & 3 to be fine but 1 & 4 to be sooty??? i also noticed when i turn of the engine there is smoke still coming from the righthand exhaust??? can anyone help me as i don't want to give up on the old girl

the back fire could be the unburnt fuel igniting in the pipe from heat...I would agree...check the 1/4 coil and the wire running to it, and the plug where it connects to the harness...make sure its got a good connection and isnt corroded...also check the HT wires, but I think it would be in the coil or before.......

Coil may well be the problem, but a thought comes to mind -
Maybe 1 he just cleaned up the plugs, and didn't change them, or
2 he's put in plugs which are the wrong type.
3 He regapped the plugs to the wrong setting - should be 0.8mm for info.
DPR9EA9 are correct ones, for info.
3 If the bike just died, maybe the reg/rec is faulty - if the battery isn't getting enough charge, these bikes are inclined to stall at slow speeds, because the battery will only begin charging above 3000 RPM with a standard reg/rec. (I have an aftermarket one which gives me 13.5 V at 1500 RPM - big improvement)
Are you SURE it was a new battery, not just one tarted up to look new, with fresh acid, which may last a day or two ? You must have some recourse on that at least.............

My course of action would be
1 Check the charge in the battery - should be 12.6V or more with the engine off, and 13.5V or more with it running above 3000 RPM. If that all checks out, your reg/rec is fine, but the battery may still be faulty.
2 Have the battery "load tested" at your local battery shop - it's quick and will tell you if all is well there.
3 Pull the plugs, check for spark, type and replace if you think they're old.
4 Run a test on the coil leads to check for breakdown. cracks etc.
There are probably other areas to check, but those come to mind......
Oh, and recruit some big, nasty friends,,,,,,,,

Could also be that when/if the carbs were taken a apart, they are now out and might now need balancing?
