You'd be surprised at the number of owners that *don't* know that. ;-)

item number five on this page

the tensioner for the starter/alternator damper chain - sounds like it busted or the chain has jumped off

How hard was it hit ?

Is there damage on the left side ? from a trailer hitch or something ?

But seriously Epic, I'd test the starter motor first. Earth it by putting a metal part in contact with a frame bolt or similar when it is out of the bike, hit the starter button and see if it turns without the graunching noise. If it spins without noise then you can delve deeper - such as item 5 as Sprock illustrated.

If that is the problem, you will have to replace the alternator damper - or possibly the starter clutch - both through the alternator apperture.

Fiddly but not impossible. Read all you can on it in the How To thread.

Cheers, SB

EDIT: Sprock has a great point. Where did the car hit on the LHS - to push it over on the right? How is the plastic cover that pokes out of the fairing? Did it crush that into the alloy cover perhaps damaging internals?

alternator cover and smacked the shaft and damper in the process

Yup, I agree. Just out of interest, when I was delving into the innards of my CBR, when I cleaned up the upper crankcase where the starter slots into the motor, I noted that at some time the starter cog had done something nasty and broken the case. ' Twas welded up - very neatly I might add, but none-the-less repaired from some catastrophic failure.

Cheers, SB

ok so I took a video but don't know how to up load it .. anyway ... I checked the starter motor and its working .. but also noticed something .. weather I had the spark plugs in or not it made the same sound .. and what I didn't check was spark to the plugs witch dwelled on me now .. even when I had switched over to the old coil w/ wires it did it .. so with and with out the stick coils on or off it did it and also with the old coils w/ wires .. could it be the stator ??? Again I forgot to check to see if the sticks were fireing to actually see if they were sending spark .. ill check later to conferm it , my friend is workin at the moment , its in his garage .
