Tail Lights
Hi All
brake lights stoped working.1 side the small elements lit and other side big elements lit but neither getting brighter when hitting brakes.i changed swithes and bulbs andstill nothing. diagram on top of fuse box gone but allfuses are good in box (do they have brake light fuse).or do they have another 1 somewhere on bike? (all other lights work)
thanks all in advance

Could be an earthing problem, maybe. If small are lit one side, and big are lit on the other, sounds like a wiring problem also, but I suspect just earthing - it does funny thigs to systems.

u mean ground? i took bike 4 ride they worked fine came out of store and noticed they stoped working(glad i noticed and not the coppers),seems kinda quick 4 any big problems hah!
i was just wondering if it had another fuse r something like that. but where do i start on earthing prob plz
thanks again

You call it grounding - check for the (black)wires in the tailpiece that are attached to the frame - there's surely a problem there - If it's bolted on, take it off, clean the contact points and return it.
hey shadow
u have black wire going to tail light. on my 96 i have no black only green/green yellow stripe and brown. im looking at wiring diagram and only see 1 ground(earhting) and only see 1 on bike by batt. i even tryied jumping wires by switches and still same thing. this has me puzzled all wires look good every thing else works mmmm. bikes running like a bat out of hell and scared 2 ride 2 far with no brake lights , this sucks worse than my eX some1 r every1 plz help [biker down]
thanks for the reply

Take a piece of ordinary house flex, like that used on your table lamps, bare one end about 2 inches, and wrap it tightly around the frame close to your tail light, on a bare metal section, or attach to a bolt which is firmly grounded to your frame. Pull the bulb in its socket out of the tail light, and touch the other end of the flex to the side of the globe. Press the brake light.(with ignition on) If this doesn't do the job, it's not an earthing problem, you have either a blown fuse or broken wiring somewhere.
One last question- stupid as it might be - is your brake light switch working properly ? Return spring not broken, or not making contact ?
I checked the wiring diagram for the 1000F-P - there's a ground wire attached to the same bolts as hold your regulator rectifier on, which is same as my bike - I think this is the earth for the rear section of the wiring loom. And yes, your ground wires are G, or G/B
How about a simple check with a test light and start tracing back to the switch? If it was a ground/earth issue then the park light wouldnt work as the ground in the bulb should be using the same circut. Put your test light from the output of the brake switch and hit the brake. (keep in mind you have a switch on the front lever as well as the rear) Chances of both switches going belly-up at once is highly unlikely.
Can anyone tell me what type of fuse is used on the main fuse panel? Are they just the blade type fuse or the mini-blade type?

Actually after re-reading your first note, it definitly sounds like grounding issue. If the other filment in the bulb is lighting then the ground side of things is not capable of completing the circut and it is trying to backtrack using the bulbs parklight. Thats why it comes on dim. Sorry if I keep rambleing on....
