RE: synthetic oil, true or false???
When I bought my '94 w/ 40k the owner told me he had used nothing but fully synthetic for the last 20k. Bike was due for an oil change, first thing I did was change it with dino motorcycle oil - bike now has 44k runs perfect. I'm way too cheap to spend $6+ a quart on something I think is basically a gimmic, especially when it doesnt increase time/miles between changes.

I think chesthing was refering to the "once you go synthetic you can't go back" myth.
So long as you change all of the oil there would be no problem.
Basicly, people are stupid. It's easier to tell them once you go synthetic you can't go back because otherwise they'd probably go all "mad scientist" and start making up your own semi-synthetic blends (probably does happen). Plus what better way to sell more synthetic oil than to "scare" ppl into buying it?

Yeah, I think synthetic oil is a gimmick. Just my opinion, doesnt mean I'm right. I will say this - I have a 1993 Dodge Ramcharger with 260k, never touched the engine except for timing chain at 200k for preventative maintenance and the truck still runs like new - same mileage and power I had when I bought it 10 years ago with 100k. All I've ever done was change the oil every 3k, filter every 6k.
Due to the line of work I've been in for the last 12 years I've driven probably an average of 40k/year, way more than the average driver. I've never had an engine-related breakdown in any of my vehicles. I tried synthetic oil once, and noticed absolutely no difference in running or mileage.

RE: synthetic oil, true or false???
This oil discussion made me think to check the oil - it's been 2,500 miles since changing it, and I had to add 2/3 quart! I went and bought some $8 mobil 1 fully syn motorcycle oil tonite and replaced the dino oil - I'm not used to owning a vehicle that uses oil and am hoping this will stop it. Who knows, maybe I'll change my opinion - if it uses it at the same rate I'll definately go back.

I was told that it didn’t matter if you want to change to a different oil, but it was important that changing to a different oil was done at a oil change (include the filter) and to always top up with the same oil as is in the bike, unless you were stuck somewhere.
