Steering stem adjustment nut

Steering stem adjustment nut
Hi all
I am in the middle of stripping the bike down and am going through various bits.
I have detected a bit of play in the steering head. Has anybody had any luck with adjusting the nut with a pin spanner rather than a £40 specialist socket that I am only ever going to use once?
Thanks all!

not sure about the original tool, but with the c spanner tighten the bottom collar it does give you the tech data in the manual ( but sometimes its better to nip the collar up and keep checking the stem moves freely) drop the tab washer on and tap it into the bottom collar, put the top one on and tighten down to the tab washer, lock the bottom collar with one spanner and tighten the top one down bend the tab washer up into it, job done
