So how do you know it's time to replace the cam chain tensioner?

Default So how do you know it's time to replace the cam chain tensioner?

It's noisy when cold at lower RPM's but goes away at about 2000 RPM and then all together once she's warmed up. But it sure sounds bad, I am imagining the chain slapping around in there chewing up the softer metals that gets in it's way. I've learned to accept the noise as one of her personality traits, but is there a point when I better fix it or else?

Depends on age and mileage but, the general consensus is that if the noise stops when she's warmed up, it's normal.

Others have changed the chain and tensioner, only to have the noise return after a few thousand miles.

But at the end of the day, do what you think is best

Yes & from what i have recently experienced a $ 3.50 pair of earpuds & ignorance is the ony way to go when the rattling starts.

Unfortunately the cold rattle seems to be a 'personality trait' with these bikes, ie. bad tensioner design & as hawkwind said "if the noise stops when she's warmed up, it's normal"

Shame.. apart from this 'trait' the 1000F is such an awesome machine !

Thanks for the responses. My gut tells me that it's fine. (But my gut also tells me it's ok to have another long island iced tea when I've had a couple already.) I'm just gonna accept it as "her being grumbly in the morning" and worry about it when she becomes as grumbly as often as my wife.

I've replaced the cam chain and tensioner on my '92 after 86.000km with the originals (it was really annoying, even with the engine at operating temp below 3000rpm).

No more noise now, was really worth it
