Default A snapping sound when braking

When I have to apply the front brake a bit heavier than normal, when releasing the brake I hear and feel a tight "snap". I am thinking about the bearing in the steering. However, a Honda mecanic said it is propably the brakes that snap when releasing the brake lever.

Anyone else have this same problem? Is it something I should be concerned about - maby a safety issue?

Here is a pic of the "Oldie but Goldie". Talking about the bike here....

I'd change my mechanic if I were you - It's your steering head bearings for sure. Mine does it too, and I'm about to change them.......[X(]

Shadow 1, is there any other symptoms that a worn out steering head bearings may cause? When you turn all the way left and right and back again, do you feel the steering go smooth from side to side or is it sticking?

The clicking sound when braking is mentioned in the manual as the first sign of steering head bearing wear.[X(]
The bike will not hold its line properly in corners, also, almost like having a soft front tyre. Bike will "wobble" a little at slow speeds also.
Sometimes if you put the bike on the main stand, the steering will "fall over " to one side.
Also, moving steering at rest you will sometimes get a grating feeling through the bars, or they will feel too loose. Sure signs that steering head bearings are going. When were yours last replaced ?
Maybe you can tighten them a half=turn on the main nut, not sure. I'll be replacing mine soon, so will take pictures......[8D]
Check your front wheel bearings too, for sideways play and grating - very bad if they fail on the road........[>:][>:]

Changed mine recently, they take a while to seat properly, had to tight the nut twice until they were finally seated.

Shadow (aka, Jokester), are you going to use roller bearings or change them to the tapered bearings?

I had the same on my Cane -92, a strong click sound from the head bearings atfull stops in town. I didn't bother to replace it directly since it didn’t affect the stability, and then the bike wasthen traded for a Bird. The Bird felt far easier to make very small steering movements atwalking speed before stoplights to stay in line with foot on pegs. I thought this was due to much better head bearings condition. This turned out to be true; when I've tested other Canes in better conditionthey have not been a bit resistant to steering commands, as mine was.
