Rattling sound coming from my 88 hurricane...HELP PLEASE!?
Hi guys,
Today while driving to work, it seemed like my exhaust sounded meaner, I thought that maybe I got a hole, but I also hear a rattling sound coming from up front around the radiator. It rattles louder when I rev it (i dont know if thats a duh thing, just putting out all the facts for you guys). The bike is not leaking fluids and it was not overheating at all. Also, there didnt appear to be a lack of power, but then again I havent really pushed it all that bad today.Any input would be appreciative. Thanks for your guys time.

Ill check during my break right now. I am having problems getting my seat off to get at the tools though, is there any tricks or anything I should be doing to get the seat off?
Wonder if something may have broken off inside the exhaust from age (corrosion, rust, etc) and is just in there rattling around. That would explain the difference in exhaust sound.
now that ive got it home, the exhaust doesnt sound better or louder...its just a rattling...it doesnt sound like something broke off because its too rythmic...if that makes sense. Is adjusting the cam chain tensioner difficult?
I had the same sound in my exhaust ever since I first owned it. Friends told me to replace the exhaust since it sounded like a baffle had come loose so I bought a Hindle 4-2-1 system for it but the sound persisted. I swapped cams, ignition, rebuilt the motor and it never went away. I began to think that this was the way it was supposed to sound until I ran into another Hurricane owner and his bike didn't sound like this. Never did figure it out, although the turbo sort of completely changed everything. Now it just goes "Whiiiiizzzzzz.... pssshhhhtt"
Man, totally NOT the answer i was looking for :P. The bike has a rattle that does not sound kosher. other riders can tell. I tightend every thing i could think of but still the rattle persists. It sounds kind of like a lifter rattle in a car or truck...but not nearly as bad sounding. Its a metallic rattle.Mr. Self destruct, how many miles did you put on the bike with it doing this? I am kind of afraid to keep driving it daily if there is something wrong with it. anyone agree or disagree with that? This is my only mode of transportation but I wont ride it if it can mess it up more.
Don't know if your bike is set up so you can raise the front of your fuel tank and prop it up, but if you can do so and run the engine. Use a screwdriver or stethescope to isolate the noise. Check valve clearance. If it sounds like a lifter that could be it. Check cam lobe oiler. If no oil is getting to the cam you may be hearing metal-to-metal which might telegraph as a rattle. Check valve springs. Broken springs can make clicking sounds that may be taken for a rattle. Is your bike a California model with all the extra emission plumbing? I'm not familiar with it, but there may be some check valves or diaphrams rattling around in there.
