Default Question about shock arm

I've just removed the shock and swingarm on my F-L (need to rub down some rust). It looked to me like the shock arm (the cast unit with three pivots) was fitted back to front. The narrowest pivot was towards the rear of the bike but in the diagram in the service manual it is towards the front.
Is this possible? Would it fit that way and would it make a difference to the working of the suspension, the handling, the ride height? I'm only 5'4" so the lower the better!
Thanks!
