Petcock malfunctioning
I went for a 200 mile ride Sunday - I filled up and set the tripometer. At 170 miles, bike started to run out of gas, stumbling and coughing but the fuel gauge read above reserve - I flipped the petcock **** to reserve and it started running fine again. I always make it to 200+ miles before needing to turn to reserve, the bike has never done this before. Anyway, with 200 miles on the trip, I filled up with 4.8 gallons - I got my usual 42 mpg - can anyone shed any light on this?
I haven't checked out the petcock on the CBR, but the pickup on my Suzuki sits several inches higher than the reserve pickup. So at the 170 mile mark, if you take a long right-hand curve or a series of curves, the pickup may stick above the gas level. This would starve the carbs until you turn on the reserve.
I think that sound about right. I switch over to reserve at 175 to 190 miles depending on riding conditions of corse.
I had a CB750F that I rode to Datona from up-state NY twice and each time I would swithch over at 215 almost all the time and get 225 miles per tank. It was like clock work because I was running at hiway speed at all times.
It is a little unperdictable with the 1kF because I never stay on the express ways long enough to find out what it takes to switch over. I did get 190 as I had mentioned above however I was riding on I91 at a rapid rate for about 100 or more miles.
I figure the 750 was getting 52 MPG and the 1kF usualy gets 42. I think if I took it easy without starting from stops the bike would get 48 to 50 MPG.
At 170 miles after setting the trip I usualy stop and gas up because I know that I will have to soon anyway. Time for a coke or coffee and streach the legs as well.

Thanks, my body has come a long way this year getting used to the riding position. I was in bad shape that first couple months of owning the bike - I even started seeing a chiropractor. I think riding this bike called attention to an existing problem I didnt even know I had - my bed was many years old and we hadnt flipped it in years - we replaced it and 3 months later I feel like a new man! riding 200+ miles I now have no discomfort whatsoever.
Glad that you have finally got used to sitting on the bike, I think that its a good position to sit in, either slightly leaning forward or able to sit nearly upright. All you have to do is, dare I say it, keep your ballance. Its a great feeling, All that power when you want it and plenty of comfort for older bones, aaaaahhh what a feeling. As for the fuel, I like that fact that if I keep her below 4000rpm then I'm looking at 52mph, but to keep that I have to use my carb ballancers at every service which is at every 2000miles. Which means I'm not always looking for fuel like some of my mates who have smaller tanks on other makes of bikes.
