If you gents could indulge me another question...I'm getting to the brakes now, and the pads all around have plenty of meat on them (about 1/4 inch). But I don't see any grooves in any of them (to indicate wear). I've put a flashlight in there and still don't see any...can that be right? And, there's too much pad left to be worn down past them already. I'd rather not change pads unecessarily.

Thanks
Dave

Not all pads have grooves in them. I'm surprised at how long motorcycle pads last. If you have plenty of material left on them, then don't replace them. Just make it a point to check them every 3 months or so.

The only thing I'll add re: pad life is that they are like tires, i.e. once they get close to needing replaced, they wear down very quickly. As Mr. Dirt noted, if there is plenty of material and they are working, just put an eye on 'em every few months...

Thanks guys! Since you brought up tires...what should I do about mine? They only had a few hundred miles on them before I put the bike away in favor of a new one, about 14 years ago. They've been sitting (on the bike) the whole time in a heated and dehumidified garage under a tarp. They still look great...my mind tells me they should be replaced, but my wallet disagrees.

By the way, what part of South Florida are you from?

Tires have a shelf life. After 14 years they are well past that. I'm sure there is some dry rot in there somewhere. If it were me, I'd definitely look into some new shoes for the girl.

With tires, I'd take no chances and fresh rubber is always nice!

Yes, my $0.02 on that as well. I agree with the new tires. I get nervous on 5 year old tires, much less 14 years.

SE FL near Ft. Lauderdale.

Well keep in mind that a new set of tires doesn't have to break the bank. A new set of Shinko's beats a 14 year old set of Michelin Pilots any day. Can get a set for <$200.
